Server ageing/scavenging properties... How to set?

Hi All,

 

Looking for a bit of a tidy up of the DNS records on the server.

 

What do I need to set-up?

 

I've done a manual click scavenge but nothing changed, I also have it set to the below screenshot.

 

 

Anything I'm missing?

 

Edit: Just to add I'm sure there must be a further issue with DNS... I use Angry IP scanner to check for any PC's that have been left on, and recently a couple of laptops have shown different names in 'HOSTNAME' and 'COMPUTER NAME' and the 'HOSTNAME' shown appears to be of old laptops. So I'd also be grateful if anyone can shed any light on this issue.

Scavenging isn't just as simple as turning it on at the root level, you have to enable it on each zone and only on ONE DNS server.

 

I used to have a really good document that explained it really well but i cant find it.

 

i would read as much information as you can find.

Kol, the way I read that is that your records will not scavenge for 90 days.

The article @apeman linked to is a good read a covers a lot.

However if you have a different dhcp lease time you will want to adjust scavenging accordingly.

All of our teachers have laptops so I like my scavenging to be a bit aggressive.

There is nothing worse than opening your admin console of choice and then connect to the wrong machine because dns and dhcp are out of sorts.

Haha, of course not. Why would anything in my life be simple?! Still I guess that's why we're paid the big bucks and if it was simple, anyone could do it and we'd have no jobs! For a while I've sat and watched everything tick by happily, now when I try making improvements to make everything easier to manage and simpler for the clients, I end up making so much more work for myself! lol

Is this date right? I thought if I'd done it right it would be today's date?

That is the date active directory uses as it start date for accounts etc. If you have enabled scavenging correctly i would say the value is miss leading and you just need to refresh your mmc console.
