Hi I need to upgrade server 2008 to R2. I was planning on installing a new virtual dc and then running forest prep dc prep etc the migrating the roles to that server. Has anybody carried this out and do you have a list of tasks to complete?.

Thanks

Is the server just a DC or does it do other stuff?

Also have you considered Server 2012? We are migrating all our 2008 R2 servers onto this.

Thanks

Hi Thanks for the reply. The server currently hosts DHCP DNS. I was thinking that server 2012 doesn't really give us any features we require. We currently have VMware for the virtual. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would go 2012, if you dont need the features now you might do another time and would save you upgrading later. It doesn't require any extra work going to 2012 than it would from 2008 R2. I will throw something together in the morning :)

My only problem with moving everything to 2012 is SP1 isn't out for it yet (and perceived wisdom is not to start rolling out new OS' until SP1 is out).

Plus 2008 R2 will be supported until 2020 so you'll be OK if you decide to go down that route.

ms have basically said no to future service packs so you will have a long wait though 2012r2 should be out the same time as windows 8.1 later this year so far I like the beta
