Connecting a laptop to tv using hdmi cable

Hi please help me. I'm trying to connect my acer laptop to my tv. I was following instruction I found but then my laptop screen went black and it only comes back on when I disconnect the hdmi cable. All instructions are for windows 7 or say push fn and f5 but that isn't working. Not very technical so please use simple terms lol. thanks for the help

No sorry that did nothing still a black screen and nothing on tv

Have you changed the source input on the tv?

Yes tv has 2 hdmi ports- 1 is the sky which is still working and the other is usually for my ps3 and is working I checked it there

FN + f5 or whatever your laptops screen mode change function key is until you can see both. also - try going into right click on desktop - screen resolution multiple display and duplicate desktop

Now have laptop back on- now I need to know how to get it to come up on tv with sound please lol

What model acer is it?

not all hdmi ports do sound the one on my old hp was video only (or at least i could never get audio out of it and there was nothing in device manager to suggest hdmi sound)

Fn F5 is normally for switching the VGA output ... The HDMI will normally handshake with the device its connected to and just work !!! What resolution is the laptop set to? Maybe its set to high for the TV ....

If Windows +P doesn't bring up the selection popup, it might be a BIOS setting needs to be enabled. This used to be the case with Viglen Dossiers.
