Grey Screen at login

Hi Guys was wondering if anyone had come across this strange problem.....

 

We have Windows 7 clients and Server 2008 with Mandatory Profiles. in the last couple of months we have noticed that when Teachers logon to workstations (we have Verbose logging enabled) everything seems to go well until it gets to the Preparing your desktop part the screen goes solid grey with just the mouse pointer displayed for around 3 minutes, eventually the machine will logon but this is causing me a lot of problems as you can imagine.

 

Any ideas? the ,man profile is only about 2mb in total?
