Post: Senior Technician

Responsible to : Director of ICT Services (DIS)

Salary : £26-28,000 per annum

Hours : 36 hours per week

Context and Purpose of the Job

 

To manage and provide technical support to all Academy members with the emphasis on 2nd/3rd line or specialist support

To deputise for the DIS as directed.

 

Main responsibilities

 

 Providing technical support to all academy members with the emphasis on 2nd/3rd line or specialist support.

 Leading the development of often, complex ICT solutions in conjunction with the DIS.

 Delivering the appropriate support service, training and awareness for ICT developments,

 In conjunction with the DIS be involved in the strategic planning of future technical developments.

 Take ownership of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity from an operational perspective.

 Proactively drive systems development by keeping up to date with cutting edge systems technologies.

 Managing other members of the technical support team.

 Supporting, mentoring and training other members of the technical support team.

 Support the DIS in the development of a ‘hard federation’ approach.

 Supporting the DIS with the development of centralised support services for the federation Schools and Academies.

 

ICT Systems Development and Support

 

 Providing 2nd/3rd line support to the academy’s ICT systems.

 Developing and taking ownership of technical solutions to complex problems.

 Developing solutions based on a set of functional requirements.

 Lead and manage ICT implementation projects.

 Physically install desktop, server, network and multimedia hardware.

 Creating clear documentation on the configuration, use and support of ICT systems and developments.

 Be responsible for disaster recovery and business continuity of ICT systems on an operational level as well as the testing of systems and processes.

 Perform monitoring, management and maintenance of ICT systems and services.

 Actively work to continually improve the reliability, resilience, performance and functionality of ICT systems.

 Work with the DIS to embed a process driven approach to ICT support and management.

 Deputise for the DIS as directed

 Act to support and as a resource to other members of the ICT team.

 

Procurement

 

 Purchasing and advising on the purchase of ICT software, hardware and solutions in line with academy procedures and financial regulations.

 

Staff Management, Training and Development

 

 Manage the day-to-day activities of other members of the technical support team as well as managing these staff as a resource on larger projects.

 Provide ICT training and act as a technical resource to other members of staff.

 Keep knowledge of ICT technologies up to date via external training and industry events.

 Work towards professional certifications as part of performance management.

 

Web Site Management

 

 Assist and lead, with input from the DIS, in the maintenance and development of the academy’s website.

 Assist and lead, with input from the DIS, in the maintenance and development of the academy’s VLE (Frog).

 Be aware of the latest web technologies and input into the strategic direction of the academy’s web presence.

 Ensure the quality of the academy’s website and information published on it.

 

Compliance

 

 Ensure that all ICT services are in compliance with child protection or any other relevant legislation.

 

Accountability

 

 Accept responsibility for ICT service problems and actively seek solutions.

 Ensure that any ICT service or equipment meets health and safety requirements.

 

 

Other

 

 Support a defined SLA for ICT services and continually look for ways to improve performance.

 Gather feedback and conduct reviews on the quality of ICT systems developments

 To attend all meetings identified by the DIS or project team manager.

 Work with external agencies and providers to deliver solutions and support.

 To promote a positive ethos to all academy stakeholders.

 To participate in the performance management process.

 To work effectively with staff at all levels

 To undertake other various responsibilities as directed by Line Manager or the Principal

 The post holder will be required to be available during out of work hours for emergency call out

 

Person Specification

 

Job Title: Senior Technician

 

Qualifications (Desirable)

 

College educated within a relevant discipline

5 GCSEs at A* to C including English and Maths

Professional certifications in Microsoft and/or Cisco technologies e.g. MCSA/MCSE (at least Windows 2000) CCNA

Any other relevant professional IT certifications

 

 

Experience (Essential)

 

At least 2 years experience of providing technical support (2nd/3rd line) and systems development in a medium to large ICT environment

Experience of managing and supporting Windows desktop and server systems and managed network environments

Experience using Disaster Recovery technologies and methodologies

Working in an ICT support environment to defined service levels and targets

Implementing solutions based on user or customer requirements

Experience working on projects as part of a team.

Experience of other key IT manufacturers or providers products and technologies

Experience of leading on projects as part of a team.
