Green/Blue Screen Setup

Hi All,

 

This is totally out of my levels of understanding so i apologise if this is confusing...

 

I have been asked to look into a setup that students can use to film themselves then edit there videos in wierd and wonderful ways. They said they wanted a video camera to film green screen and then change backgrounds and overlay things.

 

My understanding is,

 

Any camera can be used to film someone with a green (or just a solid colour behind them).

 

Then the software does all the necessary changes.

 

Am i correct or is there certain camera's better than others?

 

Does anyone have such facilities that they could point me in the right direction?

I put in a TV studio at our place. It's not as straight forward as you've stated. You need a pro-sumer camcorder. Which is a fancy way of saying you need a 3ccd or 3mos camcorder (£500) instead of a basic single chip camera. Camcorders which have this make a big deal of it, so you don't have to scrutinise stats.

 

We also use an edirol lvs400 video switcher (£800) which does live green screen. And rather than pay£1000 per sq metre of tru-matte material, we went to b&q and got Dublin bay 3 mixed up. Add in some low heat halogen lights from Newland Media (£1500) and you're done.

 

If you're in the north east you're welcome to set up a visit to check out our studio. Not that I'm excluding anyone not local

 

Alternatively give Planet PC a call, they specialise in school green screen and sell all in one cases designed around a laptop and the Newtek Tricaster software. I think they start at the £2500 mark.

I suppose it depends on how much you're going to use it. We're a primary school so don't use ours much. Our setup is a bit simpler than Quince's.

 

We have a standard HD canon video camera. Green paper stuck to a wall and final cut express on an older macbook. It works fine for our little projects and works very well if we are green screening stop motion animation type things.

One of our primary's uses their iMac and iMovie. Not sure. What camera they are using but as a total video / iMovie novice I managed to turn the pupils into newsreaders in a newsroom set!

 

What in saying is iMovie has the functionality of you have a mac in school
