So Windows 10 basically has double the initial login in time as windows 7? That's shocking! I understand that Windows 10 comes with more features and things to setup, but that really is a huge down side to upgrading

Out of interest, how does it compare to Windows 7? Is Windows 10 slower on first local profile load? This was one of the reasons we are not migrating to it as our Windows 7 machines only take 25 seconds.

Not really, only the Model X was late, all other cars have shipped in the timescales set. They learned from the Model X not to over-complicate the engineering side of things apparently.

We just use Chrome these days. Every GPO setting is there that is needed. EDGE will take years to catch up, if ever.

As long as you have Gbit switches to the AC wireless then you should be fine.

Yep it is, but with all the hardware the same we have hosts to use as spares or fall back on. They are cheap Dell R330's that cost around 1k each, so not really a big expense or hassle. All are the same model. Just normal 2008 R2 Hyper-V hosts 2 SSDs per system, 1 x 600gb Intel and 1 x 2tb Samsung Around 900GB user storage (We archive, resize photos, have a dedicated video server (planet E-Stream), Run FSRM to block certain files) Backups are 4 x 2tb Samsung SSD on a dedicated server in another building yes (backup speed is key in our setup without RAID). Hopefully you can see, we are not just using single disks and hoping for the best. We have designed the system around the fact that storage is easily migrated.

This simply isn't true from our experience, SSDs are a magnitude more reliable than mechanical spinning disks. If you have experienced as many SSD failures as hard disks, then you are simply buying the wrong brands.

Well that's a good point but why not? A full restore of our file server SSD >> SSD takes around 55mins. Not that we've ever had a disk failure with our Intel SSD's in the last 5 years but I will entertain the possibility If you look at the stats, for RAID you are going to need at least 3 disks probably. That means your storage is 3 times more likely to fail at some point. Personally I would much rather just restore our file server to a dedicated host with 1 click, than start messing around with RAID in the bios or replacing hard disks. The downside is, of course the potential time it takes to restore, but to be honest our staff can handle 55mins of no file server. Its very unlikely to happen with the reliability of SSD storage but if it did then its not the end of the world. Just as an example, our finance server failed a few years ago and we restored the entire thing in 15mins using Veeam to a separate host. I've spent longer, trying to work out a problem just because a service has stopped or something

Yes I've run up to about 10 I think on local storage without issue. I've found RAM is the only real limiting factor for the number of VM's. I even wrote about some of my experiences here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/behind-red-door/131323-building-stable-ict-systems.html Good virtual infrastructure (in my humble opinion) = balanced servers, instant backup, spare hardware to migrate, spare parts to fix, common hardware for hosts and solid state storage at every level. All these ideas about SANS, replication, hardware level RAID would be great if I worked for a multi national company in a data center, but in reality I'm responisible for about 1,200 users and design my infrastructure to match this requirement *Not saying the others are wrong of course, but my philosophy has always been to keep things simple, stable and blazingly fast.
