Subscribe I'm starting a computer club at our primary school and would love some ideas of software or interesting things the kids and I can do. The children are between the ages of 9 and 14. Please Help....
Jazzman 25 Posted February 11, 2009 I recommend Scratch - the children pick it up really quickly and can get there teeth into it! Scratch | Home | imagine, program, share
zx2012 30 Posted February 11, 2009 I've run lunchtime computer club for the last 3 years in Y3, Y4 and Y5. The children can do want they want subject to being sensible. In the past after school we've done a series of using Word and PowerPoint plus doing a little work with the DigitalBlue cameras. At my other school we done a lot with Microsoft PhotoStory. I've just finished 6 weeks with Y2 doing an animation club. We bought some webcams and I used Microsoft Movie Maker to import all the photos and create a video from them. After half term I'm doing the same with Y5. I'd quite like to do some work with Scratch too. Maybe with Y6.
Polski 114 Posted February 12, 2009 Do a poll of what interest them. Games? Then how about a games / cheats database? Cars? Speed, cost, acceleration fuel economy and stuff. You can start off with an Excel spreadsheet and end up with a SQL database being accessed by a php web interface. Room enough for growth?
browolf 1,127 Posted February 13, 2009 what about typing software, some of them are quite fun and the benefits are long lasting.
HodgeHi 1,066 Posted February 13, 2009 I did a few dinner time classes with some year 6 pupils. I got them into teams of about 4-5 and then got some oldish PCs out of the cupboard. I then let them take them apart and as we re-built them together we learnt about the parts, what they're called, how they go together etc. I thought about what the pupils would need as they move to secondary school and i thought that skills to allow them to repair their computer at home would outweigh any learning of word-processing /spreadsheeting (they should learn this in lessons anyway) since it means the parents don't have to trundle off down to PC world and get ripped off for a simple job. We finished to classes with a re-install of XP and how to configure the machine to boot from CD. What was interesting though was how many girls i had in the classes. They were also genuinely interested.
