The less critical backups are writing to a fixed external drive. The weekly backup is writing to a external drive we swap every week and put in the safe. The disk array of the backup server has approx 1TB free. The drive has been thoroughly de-fragmented. I had intended to duplicate the weekly backup to write onto the disk array too but

 

When I came back from the hols I noticed I'd accidently left a test backup over-writing 30gb every day. Then I discovered this since 30GB file was really badly fragmented.

 

A quick look on google and I discovered bad fragmentation is a known issue of backup exec 10d. Then I found a patch to enable pre-allocation of files. Yay! The I found the patch required SP1...../sigh

 

Until recently no one messed with the backup server as it was installed by Zentek and we didn't want to break it. Naturally no one updated it either. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere installing BE SP1 required installing all the agents again. I don't know anything about that and I don't think it would be a good idea to experiment with a major upgrade in the middle of term. Looks like getting out backup strategy sorted out properly is going to have to wait till the summer hols now.

I would imagine BE sp1 would require an agent update (and probably a reboot) to get it going.

We recently switched to MS DPM 07 which is good but has its niggles. Its cheap at least and dpm 2010 looks like its going to be brilliant when it comes out this summer.

Microsoft Data Protection Manager. The next build looks good and supports item level restores from sharepoint 2010 for example and under Schools Agreement licensing the lics are very very very very cheap. We used to use BE before.

we're running the RC of DPM 2010 its so much better than 2007 its running so smoothly now.

Not to go OT but can you confirm RC->RTM upgrade support? also did you do an upgrade from an existing 2007 install?

answer is yes to both, RC to RTM is supported and I did a windows 2003 (x32) DPM 2007 (x32) --> Windows 2008 (x64) DPM 2010 (x64)

 

you have to backup the database, then uninstall DPM (Select Keep Replicas). Reinstall Windows if you have to(x64) (don't wipe the replica partitions). Then reinstall DPM 2007, restore the database, sync the database, then re-sync the replicas.

 

Then install DPM 2010 which will upgrade the DPM 2007 (x64) install. Obviously agents need updating, I found if you did this manually it didn't need a reboot!

 

I should warn you though one replica lost its recovery points, a week later, I don't know if it was related?

Did it fix itself or what did you do?

Thanks for RTM link, going to get it now if possible.

 

EDIT: RTM does not appear to be on technet plus yet or VL.
