Hi
We currently have exchange 2003. We wanted to upgrade to exchange 2010 sp1 today.
We now have a big issue.
My colleague bought up a server 2008R2 server and fully updated from windows update.
He then ran the exchange setup wizard and selected all the roles, the installer performed all the checks and told us what else was needed. (IIS, filter pack for office 2010 etc) They were then installed.
The wizard then started installing the roles, they all completed except for the mailbox role, this was left for 2 hours and the progress bar had not moved so he killed the installer in task manager.
We are now not able to remove exchange from that server. It also shows up in the system manager for exchange 2003 on the 2003 box as a new administrative group.
we have tried rightclick, delete on this group but it wont delete.
any ideas as to how we can remove the traces of ex 2010 and start again.
thanks
nick

First of all, try a clean remove, go to add/remove in control panel then remove exchange.
If this fails, try removalal from setup.exe.
Post any errors you receive and PM/post the exchange setup log

It would not remove from programs and features or setup.exe, so my colleague has now formatted the server and tried to start again.
The server that failed (mentioned above) is still showing in the ESM on the 2003 Box (working).
How can we get rid of this?

You may have issue when you try to reinstall Exchange 2010, but hopefully setup will write those settings again.
Use the link below. If you have issues then post back.
You want to use the ADSIedit section for the removal from AD as your have formatted your server.
Manually Uninstall Last Exchange 2010 Server from Organization » MsgSense

14th April 2011, 07:16 PM #5 I have done similar before. This was years ago though. It was in a test environment so it didnt matter.
It might be worth a try on msexchange.org - Lots of Exchange specialists on there.

You will also have to envoke ADSIEdit and edit the offending machine from the EXCHANGE SERVERS container.
