Storing profiles off the server. Will data still travel via the server?

Hi.

One of our sites has a mega slow connection speed so logging on and off can take up to 10 minutes.

There is a NAS drive that holds their data on site however. If we were to point their profile to this drive on the server would the profile be transferred from nas drive to computer or would it go via the server (nas - server - workstation)?

Many thanks,

Dan

dany2010, your info is a bit sketchy so its impossible to comment. theres a good chance that your nas is connected to the server, and which case the only way the users can access the nas is via the server, so yeah it would have to go via the server...

Yes - each workstation will pick up files directly from the NAS (assuming your NAS is attached to your LAN - you might have it sitting on a dedicated ethernet port on your server or something). How do you have things set up at the moment - a share on the NAS mounted on the server, and then re-shared from the server? What does your server do - act as a secondary domain controller?

Thanks for your replies. Sorry about the lack of info.

The NAS is a linux machine that shares the folder itself so if you type in \\nasname or \\nasIPAddress it will show the folders. It sits on its own ethernet port similar to a workstation.

The profile in the user account settings could point to \\nasname\%username% for example.

The personal files area is pointed to \\nasname\userfile\%username%

The only thing that is setup on the server is the DNS record so we can use the NAS name rather than ip.

Hope this is clearer.

Then yes it should work. Are you running an Active Directory domain? is the nas joined to the domain? as this will make setting permissions etc alot easier. But yest it should work.
