Should wireless ssid be the same on all units?

Normally when setting up a wireless network I use a different sid name for each wireless area, for example Hall or KS2.

 

I recently took over a school that had been managed by the CC and found all the sids have the same name. This is not causing any issues with the laptops that get moved from area to area.

 

What is best practice and why?

Ive always given all of my access points the same ssid so that portable devices can move freely around the school ... this is possible I think with different ssids but as you move areas for the first time the device attempt to stay on the old access point untill it finds a stronger signal ..it will then attempt to conect to the new access point, if its a different ssid it will want the password to access this (in its opinion) different wireless network

Single SSIS makes admin easier and is the standard practice whenyou know everything is hunky-dory and you've got good coverage as AFAIK a client will see the stronger signal on a nearer AP and just switch to it.

 

However, if you have a rogue AP, then tracking it down is a nightmare!

 

Individual SSIDs makes fault finding much easier but I've found that unless you get a class of users to check which AP/SSID they are connected to, you can easily end up with clients holding onto a far way AP for dear life.

We use multiple SSIDs here. There is 1 for teachers that is the same college wide, then each of our wireless trolleys has a unique one. We also use A band for the wireless trolleys to reduce the possability of interference.
