Our standard procedure for building up windows XP images includes the following:

Stage 2 - Make LOCAL POWER USERS GROUPS inc. DOMAIN USERS

a. Right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'.

b. Expand 'Local Users and Groups'. Select 'Groups' and right-click 'Power Users'.

c. Select 'Add to Group' -> select 'Add' -> select 'Advanced' -> select 'Find Now' -> Highlight to 'add Domain Users' -> select 'OK' -> select 'OK' -> and select 'Apply'.

ALSO

Stage 3 - Set C:\ PERMISSIONS FOR DOMAIN USERS

a. Open up 'My computer' and right-click the C:\ drive.

b. Select 'Sharing and Security'.

c. Select the 'Security' tab - > select 'Add' -> select 'Add' -> select 'Advanced' -> select 'Find Now' -> Highlight to add 'Domain Users -> select 'OK' -> select 'OK' -> set Modify permissions for Domain Users -> select 'Apply' -> and select 'OK'.

&

Edit Registry:

To edit the registry, select Start - > Run -> enter 'regedit' to open Registry Editor and browse through the various folders (as detailed below) to change theMaintainServerList to No.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters]

'MaintainServerList=No'

Has anyone found the need for doing similar on Windows 7?

Cheers

EEEk, is this to get old software to work without having to figure out just what files it needs. The above steps switch off almost all security on the system and XP was lapse with that anyway. 7 is tougher on security and so you would probably need to wipe all security again to get old software running without actually going through and looking at each bit of software and just unlocking the required files.

LOL :)

Yea probably was to get some software or other to work....

So I will NOT do the above steps.....

I'm 95% through creating GPO's for our win7 setup.

Next is testing ALL the software that either runs over the network or has to be installed locally.....

Process moniter is your freind with snotty software, it can tell you what files and reg keys it hits issues with. One nice thing about 7 if you have UAC on is registry virtualisation which will actually allow some of the dirtier programs free reign on their own sandboxed copy of the registry removing much of the hassle.
