Fiber Line costs

Hey everyone, we are becoming and academy soon and have always bought our Broadband through the local council.

 

They have just given us new pricing for our 100mbit line which is around 20kpa. We used to pay 7.5k for our 10mbit line so this is a big jump.

 

So I'm just wondering what is everyone else paying for a dedicated fiber line?

The best thing you could do is go to BT and ask what cost a leased line would be from them for 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 mbit then you have a direct comparison.

 

What other people pay can vary so much your better getting a dead on quote from someone who would usually be competitive (its likely depending where you are that the council just lease the line from BT then put that cost and some extra onto the school).

We are indy and we actually found the best deal from BT by a long way.

Actually I forgot to ask are those prices with or without VaT? If they are without I voted in the wrong category.

Having got quotes from a lot of suppliers over the last couple of months we've found CCSLeeds and Vaioni to be the two cheapest suppliers. Both were around £8.5k/year (3year contract) for 30mbit on a 100mbit bearer with ADSL backup and 99.9%/100% SLAs. All the major ISPs were much more than that. Do bear in mind however that both of the above are resellers which is why they can get cheaper pricing

£5.5k soon to go up to £10.6k because other schools are pulling out and the remainder are making up the costs (which annoyed alot of schools)

@Soulfish - to give 100% uptime guarantee (which is what i think you mean when you say '100% SLA') does that mean they don't run on the BT network? If they do, it's impossible for them to give a 100% uptime guarantee as only BT are able to do that on their own network. Even a leased line from BT they don't guarantee 100% uptime 24/7/365 as they have a built in 'money back guarantee' for any downtime experienced so if someone else is buying a leased line off them then selling it on to schools with a markup (which is what i expect most councils do) then they cannot give a guarantee of 100% uptime.

 

Obviously if the hardware / cabling etc they are selling isnt on the BT network they can guarantee what they like, i'd always be sceptical of the council trying to sell a 100% guarantee though.....call me a cynic but there you go! haha

That wasn't a council but a commercial provider. Our council don't provide us with a SLA . The 100% uptime SLA was financially backed and was measured cross both the main fibre line and the backup ADSL line. They were also guaranteeing 99.9% uptime on the main fibre line

We are with redstone and have a leased line, 30MB on a 100MB bearer again with an ADSL backup - costs just over £15K or there abouts.

We are with our LEA who provide all services such as broadband on 10mb line along with upstream filtering - moodle hosting and some email hosting (which we don't use but its all part of the same USO system with Atomwide) the Lines are maintained by Redstone.

We asked our staff if they required NEN access before making the decision to leave the LEA and they said "whats NEN?" so.......

 

As for county type things, in our case the links back to our county will still be there we just wont be using them for our main ISP so there will still be some activity down them for county staff based within the school.....

Just a minor technicality - but 100% uptime is less than 99.9% uptime depending upon how they rounded their figures. 100% at 1 decimal place could be rounded to 99.5%. .5% outage is 1.8 days per year !!!

100.00% uptime is a different story.

Hi.

 

Our Broadband connectivity provided by the LEA will be going from £4000 pa to nearly £12000 pa in April as a result of the expected loss of the Harnessing Technology Grant, which subsidises the cost. I have had quotes for around £7500pa for a leased line with install costs of around £2500. This is for a 10 Meg line on a 100 Meg bearer. Obviosuly we have to factor in other services that we will need to provide including email and filtering. I would be interested on others experiences on all of these

Folk know my stance on a chunk of this but could I just ask those who vote to make sure that they are doing so for fibre lines ... not for copper. There is a marked difference in price (especially when looking at things like LearningStreams) ... and also to state if they have additional services on top of connectivity ... I am genuinely interested in seeing the responses to the poll too.

Ours is oging up from 4k to 6.5k however although in some part due to the loss of HT grant the LEA are replacing all the fibre to schools this year as BT have stated that they won't be able to support it much longer in it's current state (old not because of problems which thankfully are few and far between). The new contract will include SDL copper line as well for backup purposes with speeds from 2 - 20mb for the copper and 10 - 100mb for the fibre even the 100mb is only around 11k a year so it's a good deal as we get filtering etc included. I haven't found a cheaper option anywhere I can match the cost for 10mb but once you add filtering its out the window
