Just want bog standard scanner, slim & usb. hmmm Networked would be a dream but i imagine that triples the price.

We use cheap, USB-powered Canon LiDE scanners (around £30 each) connected to a Windows XP Home machine to do scanning. The software that comes with the scanner can be set up to auto-scan, you just need to get the XP machine to mount a network drive to bung scanned images in. As the scanners are USB-powered you can have the Windows machine auto shutdown as a timed job and auto-start again via wake-on-LAN or similar, so you can get a neat all-in-one solution you can just park in a corner and leave.
