Encypted excel file in exchange

I am puzzled with this one...My bursar is trying to send and receive a password protected excel file in outlook via the exchange. It does not send and she does not get any message back. She can send/receive normal excel and a password protected word doc.

 

Is there a setting in system manger that I am missing?

What kind of AV checker and Anti-spam do you have, ours trips when it can't open the file to scan it and kills it on site, the only encrypted stuff that gets through is by an exception rule for certain addresses. Perhaps this is something similar.

 

To check if it is just to do with a file type try sending it in a zip file and see if that gets through.

They wont be encypted just password protected. You can get round them with basic apps.

they can be encrypted when the file itself is password protected and if they are using Office 2007 or higher then the encryption is not so easily bypassed.

Have not tried that, sorry should have just said password protect as per message and not encrypt as in subject. We are running Sophos via LGFL. Dont really want to have to mess around with removing extensions etc as they will then have to put them back at other end

Is it getting dropped / rejected by your exchange server or the LEA smarthost / mail filter?

 

If she emails you the file (internal > internal) do you receive it?

I will test this today and report back. Can you tell me both scenarios. If I can receive internally is it then an issue with lgfl? What would I then need to do.

If you can send the file internally it means that it passes through your exchange server fine and it is something upstream (LA smarthost/filter) that is causing the issue. If it is the upstream provider you will need to contact them and ask that they add an exception for this particular user to be able to send encrypted files through their filtering software.

 

If they don't allow this you may need to find another way to send the files either by renaming, zipping or using a different method to send like private webmail or FTP to the location all depending on how sensitive the information is.

Hi Guys

Just an update

I can succesfully send the password protected file internally, problem is sending and receiving to/from external. Synetrix and Atomwide provide the internet into the school so do I need to raise a call with them, if so what do I need to tell them. The weird thing is that we can send password protected word docs internally/externally without problems?

Ask them to adjust their settings to allow the specifiv file type through, they probably already have an exception for word docs by the sounds of it.
