Student Self-Assessment

I was recording a production last night and a member of Senior Management came up to me and asked the following.

 

"Is it possible for Students to enter personal targets directly into SIMS, and then we can run reports based on this data?"

 

My reply was, "I'll investigate and come back to you".

 

Students having write access to any part of SIMS, AHHHHHHHHHHH.

 

I think the only real way of doing this is to create a spreadsheet that can be imported into Assessment i presume.

 

Any comments or ideas would be gratefully received.

You *could* let them write their grade directly in to SIMS under teacher supervision (and logged in on the teachers username), however I wouldn't recommend it. The safest option would be to set up the marksheets as you would normally, then export them to Excel and let the students enter them on there, then you can upload them back in to SIMS (which is what you said, I know lol) Edited May 5, 2010 by LosOjos

Falmouth school has written a case study for ASCL's magazine in which they describe students looking at and entering in self assessments directly into SIMS as a peer excerice. We had 6 of their pupils at our national LA conference two years ago where they spoke to an audience of 450. They were hugely supportive.

I would probably want to abstract it in some way. Add an option in SLG for students to access a assessment sheet for peer review on members of their group?

This definitely does sound dodgy to me.... I'd not want to let any students log in to SIMS unless they had virtually no permissions and even then I wouldn't be particularly happy about that. I can imagine System Manager would get rather clogged up with student's logins as well.

 

Maybe there could be some kind of generic student login issued where student's can add their own comments/grade forecasts to their own record which before being added to the system, are audited by a teacher? Still, I can imagine students writing all kinds of crud on other student's records and that no teacher would want the hassle of dealing with that.

How do they log in? The only way i can think of apart from under the teacher's account is to add them to sims manually, and then make that account the supervisor of a UDG, and have very specific custom permissions.

For us it's a pastoral thing, so it's done in PSE / form time. We produce blank templates out of Assessment Manager reporting for them. They do it together with the teacher and then the teacher can quickly put the marks into SIMs.

This would also work with the exported marksheet idea... although two upgrades ago, i had massive problems importing marksheets, the rows kept getting muddled up. Haven't needed to try again since.
