Starting Firefox to open a raft of tabs

Hi All,

I want to set up an icon on the desktop to open FF but instead of the normal home page, I want it to open nine or ten web pages in tabs.

The idea is that for certain projects, the class only have to click on the icon and they get all the sites they need to use for the lesson.

The problem I am finding is that the usual trick of adding the sites as a param to the link does not give me enough charactors to open enough sites (limit 255?). Any ideas?

Shorter URL links instead of the actual URL's, perhaps?

http://tiny.cc/ is a good one.

Alternatively, how about a plug-in for Firefox called "Speed Dial"? That'll display several pages on one screen, kind of.

http://speeddial.uworks.net/

Would take some setting up though!

I think using short URLs would probably be the way to go. Google's goo.gl is a good one because I reckon they will still be around for at least the next 5-10 years. You could also make your own using Shorty or Yourle if you have an internal web server.

Another alternative would be create a really simple webpage containing just the links you want them to open, add this bookmarklet to the Firefox bookmarks toolbar and when they click it, it will load all the links on that webpage into different tabs. The best thing about this method is that the webpage could be located on a network share (which makes it easy to update) and once the bookmarklet is in place, it doesn't need to be edited.

WideExplorer also looks quite interesting, but probably not practical.

Make a simple html page with a list of the pages and load that?

This won't automatically load the websites into separate tabs though, unless you use JavaScript to do this.

I'm sure the children are more than intelligent enough to open a few weblinks....
