mb2k01 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 (edited) Hi all, I've been meaning to post this question for a while... Do any fellow EduGeekers have an in-car PC setup? I've been thinking of doing something along these lines for quite some time, and it now seems the prices on the barenones single or double din units with motorised tft's are more realistic. I'm also slowly talking myself out of my original idea of a car "pc" and just getting one of the integrated units already set up (as in not running Windows etc) If anyone has already been here and done it all already, I'd be keen to hear recommendations and experiences. sted Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 ive seen it done a few times and ive always thought its a bit os a waste imo you can get a decent 1/2 din integrated unit that does everything a pc can do but has a sensible user interface and will work with the cars stalk control etc 1

mb2k01 Posted April 7, 2010 Author Posted April 7, 2010 Why would you want to do this? I'm not sure if that why is for me or for James. If its for me, I want to be able to have large screen sat nav, large bank of audio (and video for passengers when on long drives) plus maybe a bit of geek activity if I had wireless connectivity - checking emails, browsing, streaming etc

(Although I didn't mention is in the first post, I'm also thinking about a large HUD for my car instead - digital speedo, sat nav, rss etc!)
nicholab Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 The mini ITX store have them mini-itx.com - store - mini-itx cases 1
glennda Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 i don't know if you able to buy it ( as in not sure the technology is used by other manufactures) but i watched a top gear on dave which had the range rover (sport maybe) that displayed a sat nav type interface from the drivers side - but when looked at by the passenger it was a dvd player it looked quite good just can seem to see anything about it! here is it shown on top gear BBC iPlayer - Top Gear: Series 14: Episode 4 look at around 27 mins Toby
Arthur Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 It was the Range Rover Sport that had the dual view LCD on Top Gear. It uses parallax barrier technology. I'm not sure if it is Sharp that makes these LCDs, but they have produced a 3.4" dual view touch-screen LCD which is supposedly being used in the new Nintendo 3DS. 2010 Range Rover gets 12-inch 'dual view' touchscreen -- Engadget By the way, Kustom PCs also sell lots of car PC related parts in their CarPC Shop 1
mb2k01 Posted April 8, 2010 Author Posted April 8, 2010 Thanks Arthur. Kustom are one of the companies currently sitting in my favourites. They look like they sell some decent kit there.
