jashworth1990 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 i have a sagem router which i got from sky, im now on virgin, the internet has been activated but the sky router won't work, how do i make it work with virgin? Virgin have told me it can be done but won't tell me how, Please help thanks.
michael2k6 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Are you using Virgin media internet down the phone line? Virgin usually operates on DSL (though they now have an ADSL service too). If you're using a modem which runs straight in through coax, you'll need a DSL router. If you're using it over the phone line, then it should be doable.
FN-GM Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 It can be done. I have seen it done with Netgear ones. They where flashed with a firmware for the router. I think if you google it you would find something.

I think you mean cable and ADSL not DSL and ADSL. The coax is Cable. Telephone is (A)DSL You just need to konw the VPC VPI and any username password the new ISP uses and change these settings iin the modem. Unless these settings are locked out like, then youll need to flash the firmware like FNGM says.
jashworth1990 Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 i have got into the modem and found the section to change the dns but that is it, does this mean i need to flash the firmware? also i am getting it through the phone line.
synaesthesia Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 Yes you will probably need to flash the firmware. In the router settings can you get the information of what model it is exactly? If it is the common Netgear DG834GT then you can flash it with the stock Netgear firmware for it or better still 3rd party firmware like DGTeam : DGTeam - The Custom DG834XX Series Router Firmware Web Site The standard Sky firmware is very very heavily modified and contains very little in the way of user-changeable settings, and username and password are hard-coded to use Sky.
Guest theeldergeek Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) What model router? Sagem. As supplied by Sky. What model? Your guess is as good as anyone's. Google might throw up something, but there's no indication in the router config that I can see. EDIT : Google did throw up that it is probably a Sagem F@ST 2504 router Edited April 6, 2010 by theeldergeek

In the bog standard Sagem Sky router, this option isn't available... is it? The only DNS related config page I can see, is for a dynamic DNS service, like DynDNS.
Guest theeldergeek Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 If it is the common Netgear DG834GT Regretfully, it isn't. It is the Sagem supplied router which he has indicated he has.

SteveBentley Posted April 8, 2010 Posted April 8, 2010 Just to clarify - you've moved to Virgin's ADSL service, and you're not in an area that has cable? (Eg you're keeping your BT phone line)
