VGA to CAT5e install questions

Hi

 

I use a laptop on my desktop to teach, but the "teachers" machine is some distance away and not facing the class. I'd like to put use a VGA to CAT5e adaptor and link it via the network plate and just patch it in the wiring closet, and then link it via a patch lead to the projector in the suspended ceiling.

 

Are there any problems when going via a wiring closet? Most recommendations seem to look at a single CAT5e run, which isn't possible unless I pay a small fortune for an install.

 

Any equipment recommendations?

As long as you don't try to put it through a switch:rolleyes:, then it should work OK:)

Just remember that every connection will degrade the signal a small amount.

I did once think of setting up the following and taking a photo just to see what the response would be on here:

 

Pc > VGA-Cat5 Extender > Wireless AP (configured as bridge) ~ ~ ~

~ ~ ~ Wireless AP (configured as bridge) > Cat5-VGA converter > Monitor:D

What are you trying to achieve here?

 

How long is the run from the projector to where you are trying to reach?

 

Can you not simply extend out the VGA from where you plug the laptop in? You may degrade the image quality but you will running it through CAT5 to VGA convertors anyway.

 

I'm sure there is a more local solution for you than having to run it through the wiring closet.

The problem is the PC is on the teachers desk and the only way to get wiring back is to use the CAT5e cables as the trunking under the floor has no room left in it (stupid planning!). I don't particularly want to run cabling under rubber mats/protectors, which is another solution.

 

It just seems this is the easy way to link the VGA output from the PC to the projector. Alas it will have to be patched in the wiring closet.

I've not tried any of them yet, but there are a few VGA to wireless adapters around now... things like this CablesToGo TruLink Wireless USB to VGA Adapter Kit (81657) - dabs.com could be another option.

Not as you envision it. There isn't (afaik) any device that will turn a VGA signal into TCP/IP type packets. Without doing this, routers, switches etc will not be able to handle the data. It may be possible using specialist kit.

Wireless is certainly an option if you are not using an interactive white board or lots of video content (you tend to get audio synch issues with wireless video).

 

As for running the vga through the network you would need to connect the 2 network points directly in the comms room without going through any routers or switchers. In effect you just be running a very long section of cat5 cabling linked in the middle.
