Upgrade to Server 2008 RIS plus other Services

Hopefully i will be upgrading our exsisting Servers during Easter from 2003 some R2 to Server 2008 R2.

 

we currently run WDS in legacy mode so we can still use RIS depolyment, will this still function under Server 2008 or will it upgrade to Full WDS???

 

The other servers run services such as Print server, DNS, DHCP and PCE console is there anything that i should be aware of once these are upgraded.

printers depends on avaliability of 2008/win7 drivers in both x86 and x64 drivers you may be lucky you may not. pce? policy central?

 

dns/dhcp is pretty much the same as ever though you by default get ipv6 stuff with 08

I'd hazard a guess that RIS is unavailable in 2008. If I remember rightly RIS was depreciated in 2003 SP2. You have to have RIS installed and up and running before appying SP2 otherwhys you can't run WDS in either legacy or mixed mode.

 

There is an outside chance that a straight upgrade install of 32bit 2008 may retain WDS mixed/legacy modes but I wouldn't want to try it without a full backup. I doubt very much you'll get it working ubder 64bit 2008R2 since I'm guessing moving from 32bit to 64bit arch requires a bit more than a straight OS upgrade, possibly closer to a complete OS re-install.

 

Is the RIS server a DC? or a virtual machine? Personally I'd move any non RIS functions away to other servers, run it as a VM and keep it as a legacy 2003 R2 server for RIS only until it's not needed any more.

RIS is just on a member server, and was installed prior to 2003 R2, and i would only be upgrading to 2008 not R2, do you think RIS would still work?

if its just a member server and the new server has enough ram us disk2vhd and turn it into a vm and run it on hyper v on the new server

Like I say, personnally I'm wouldn't be hopeful and certainly wouldn't bother giving it a try without a recent ghost image. If it's a member server and it's only function is RIS the question becomes why upgrade the OS at all? The old saying seems to apply - 'if it ain't broke don't fix it!'.

We upgraded to 2008 last summer but I just kept the RIS/WDS box on 2003 for now. I'd recommend doing that then migrate the rest of your boxes to 2008 and troubleshoot issues with that first otherwise it will be raining headaches.
