Bacula software and S7000

Hi there Edugeekers,

 

Am in Zurich at the moment doing one of my world famous S7000 Discovery Days and have met with one of the key guys at Bacula. He's very keen (as you can appreciate) to see how they can integrate with S7000.

 

Question from me is how many of you are using Bacula or would consider using it as your backup software tool.

 

Off to Prague now to do the same tomorrow.

Currently a Backup Exec user and not a fan of it. If Bacula could prove it's enterprise-level credentials and is less of a rip-off than BE then I'd consider it as an alternative.

I've been looking at Bacula, MS DPM and Zamanda as possible alternatives to Backup Exec so would be great news if Bacula integrated with the S7000

That's what the man from Bacula (their CEO actually) wants too.

 

Any more takers as the more people interested in the "open source" (read free) version then greater chance I have of getting it certified for use with the S7000.

Bacula cannot be run on a windows box (would help) would be cool if was installed on the s7000

so lets feed that back to the Bacula guys and see what they come up with.

 

I'm guessing that most of you would want a Windows version?

 

as for installing it on the S7000 - very, very unlikely to happen. We have no poans to install applications on the S7000.

Hehe didn't know it didn't support Windows for the back-end. That wouldn't bother me as such but I know it might put some people off. A lot of people still see 'enterprise' as Windows DCs, Exchange and MS SQL servers. This product seems oriented to people with a *nix infrastructure (e.g. lack of MS SQL support for the catalogue DB) which could be a stumbling block for some. I wonder if a virtual appliance for the backup and DB server might help in that respect?

+1 for a Windows Edition, I shall watch this closely. BackupExec atm but only using the quick start edition and then have many diskshaddow scripts for live snapshotting of varies services and VMs. I didn’t get anywhere with connecting Backup Exec via NDMP to many S7000 so a free/cheaper alternative has all ears.

Must admit, most of the threads I've seen on here and the Ars 'Server Room' forum about backup software all seem to say most of it is a real pain to set up and use (haven't seen Bacula mentioned in there so not including it in this) and it's really a case of picking the best of a bad bunch. I'd certainly be interested in getting some kind of community support around a reasonably-priced product and making it work for us.

So that is we would like a media server version that runs on Windows 2008/2003. I don't mind Linux but setting up a backup server and being happy it is going to work is a bit different. I'm interested in this as well. Currently at the "fed up with current backup system" stage and I've used Bacula in other places.

+1 on that, maybe backup to a spare 7110 as well as doing normal replication, then use NDMP to tape?

To be honest I'm not so fussed about having a windows server version. Whatever solution we use it'll end up on it's own server and Windows or Linux is no great shakes .
