Hello All,

We have an HP Business Inkjet 2800, an A3 inkjet printer. It's reporting an error message saying "close lid", even though its lid is closed. I've had a look and can't see a little bits of paper jammed anywhere, and all lids and whatnot seem to be closed. I've tried unplugging and switching the printer back on again. Anyone come accross this problem before? Is this a software issue, or hardware - has a microswitch/sensor gone that tells the printer when the lid is closed? Anyone any idea how to repair this, or is it likely to be simpler to get a new printer?

Those things are expensive so I wouldn't have thought a new printer would be the answer.

I presume there is a microswitch have a look on the lid there is normally a little bit of plastic sticking outto press on the microswitch.

Yep - all little poky bits of plastic seem to be intact, so if its a microswitch-related problem I think it's likely that the microswitch itself has broken. Anyone know if it's possible to get that sort of thing repaired?

We had one do the same thing, twas the microswitch, we did get a local company to provide a quote but it was over £100 to do so we used it for spares, we just did some googleing/asking around to get a printer servicer/repairer. HP will also do it for you - you just need to find the right bit on their website. they've fixed two printers for free that where out of warranty, thing there might have been some issues with the design... worth a try?

I've had one of these for a year now and from new it never worked well :( Reports on the net do not rate this printer at all. I've not had this error but I would suggest that you upgrade the firmware first. The errors we were getting were all because of a firmware failure and were totally unrelated to what was actually happening. If you can get HP to repair then do so but I've found that one of the first things they say is ... has it got the latest firmware installed.

Can't offer much help but I do have a 2300 which is going begging and I think is pretty much the same unit so if you want it you can have it for postage.

Thanks everyone for your answers - I'll have a look at the firmware, see if that solves the problem. If not, I'm tempted to simply chuck the darned thing out and get a replacement laser printer - this is the front office, who print large volumes of standard A4 stuff on a regular basis, each of them having a desktop inkjet machine is silly, they'd be far better off with a decent workgroup laser (I'm thinking another second-hand 4600DTN).

Thanks! I think the main problem is they're trying to use the wrong sort of printer to do what they want - this looks like a good reason for getting them a proper laser printer. Best save that spare for someone who'll actually make proper use of it :-)

Where can you buy secondhand 4600's from and how much are they?

eBay - there's several companies on there that do professional refurbishments. They seem to have a large stock of 4600s at the moment (or, at least, they did a week or so ago). About £300 each (for the duplex + network version).

We had the same lid problem with a similar printer and ended up weighting it down with a bible :)

Hmm. Worth trying. Does it have to be a bible, do you think?

Just had a look at our 2800, and the microswitch isn't a sticky outy bit.

If you lift the flap on the right, where the print head is, and look on the left hand side there is a rectangley oval slot, in there is a black plastic flap. It corresponds with a piece of plastic on the lid. Try pushing the black flap down with a screwdriver or something similar, and see if that helps.

It was the heaviest book with the smallest footprint I could get my hands on ;) We did this after having the kids got sick leaning on the printer when they needed print outs :ballchain:

Hang on... poky bit... screwdriver... rectangley slot... nope, no luck :-(

Take lots of pictures of the printer and post them somewhere where we can take a detailed look... I'm willing to bet I can figure out where it is... :)
