randle Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 I have a Buffalo Terastation and Linkstation here. The Terastation has been working attached to the AD for some time now but i could never get the LinkStation working due to the Buffalo web interface re-prompting me to enter the admin credentials after every menu item clicked taking me back to the main menu screen. I've been in touch with Buffalo for quite some time now and have come to the conclusion that they don't seem to know what they're doing considering i've been asked what version of the firmware i'm running Three times now! Trying to get them to arrange a return and refund on this seems to just fall on deaf ears and results in a reply asking me whether i've upgraded to the latest firmware!!!! Grrr Anyway seeing as this was just happening on the LinkStation and not the Terastation, i had a glimmer of hope that this was just a one off faulty device but now the Terastation has also started doing this and now my backup system to my backup system has failed me. This almost looks like a case of lastest MS critical hotfixes changing something that Buffalo devices rely upon within the OS!? Has anyone else been getting this problem with Buffalo devices?
bossman Posted October 29, 2007 Report Posted October 29, 2007 @randle: We purchased 2 terrastation pro's 2Tb and attached them to the network as member servers and got the AD working on them. Same as you they worked flawlessly for months doing all the backups and then they just seemed to go to pieces. Have tried different firmwares but to no avail they are not even booting up now declaring error cannot load kernel. Also have error message disk 2 not playing ball. Well i will be using the disks for something else before long. At first could not fault them and recommended them to other people but wished i hadn't as they have more faults than enough and there after sales is crap. Too good to be true for the price, well as the saying goes you only get what you pay for.
maniac Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 I steer clear of anythingfrom Buffalo, had too many bad experiences with their hardware. Always the same story, good to start with, but seems to go wrong after a short while. Mike.
mattx Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 Save yourself money and a great deal of headaches and use Freenas instead. http://www.freenas.org
AnnDroyd Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 We have had similar problems with the authentication. We ended up turning it off altogether and leaving it open access, BUT, connected it to the server that backs up to it via a second network card, on a separate subnet so it can't be seen from the rest of the network. Sounds a bit clumbsy, but given it's function on the network and the layout of our backup system, it makes sense to do it this way.
Geoff Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 Save yourself money and a great deal of headaches and use Freenas instead. http://www.freenas.org OpenFiler is another option to play with: http://www.openfiler.com/
randle Posted October 30, 2007 Author Report Posted October 30, 2007 I have noticed that there's a firmware update to 1.20 which was added beginning of this month so will try that but going by the update to the firmware i carried our on the LinkStation, this made no difference.
randle Posted October 30, 2007 Author Report Posted October 30, 2007 Ok maybe this was my fault. i've just added the IP address to the proxy exclusion list and now i can browse fine. Don't really know why i didn't check this to start with
m25man Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 I have several Terastation Pro II's installed as Backup Targets and Simple NAS storage all AD Integrated and apart from the 1000 user limit never had a days problem with them! Like most things Samba, 5 mins out on the clock between Buffalo and the DC you loose authentication but apart from that they have been as sweet as!
randle Posted October 30, 2007 Author Report Posted October 30, 2007 I think your the first person who's had something good to say about Buffalo equipment!! I have the Terastation back online now but can't seem to join the Linkstation to the AD. It keeps telling me "Access permission for the domain controller is invalid" I have checked my details and they are right so not sure where to go from here.
mattx Posted October 30, 2007 Report Posted October 30, 2007 Thanks for the link to Openfiler Geoff - I'll check that out. I have built and currently use 4 freenas boxes for various tasks at work - will be interesting to see how Openfiler compares.
randle Posted October 30, 2007 Author Report Posted October 30, 2007 Thanks for the alternatives also guys
john Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 I use Terras and Links and they are all fine. @Bossman, what are you doing with yours then Part from stealing the drives from them? If they are turning into door stops, wouldn't mind taking them from you.
boomam Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 The best NAS, bar none, is the LaCie rankmounted ones. They are mentally priced at a mere £350 for Tb model. They have gigabit. And best of all: They are just Via Epia's inside! I have two of them here that ive modified and they both perform duties far beyond the stock embedded XP OS it has. HIGHLY recommended. .
projector1 Posted November 7, 2007 Report Posted November 7, 2007 Ok maybe this was my fault. i've just added the IP address to the proxy exclusion list and now i can browse fine. Don't really know why i didn't check this to start with i had this in the past what i did was to add a wildcard to the proxy bypass address ie if the ip is 192.168.0.5 then add this 192.168* instead, it will provide by pass for any address in the range since doing this i have nevery had to manually add any address for the 20 waps various swicthes, wireless printers etc!
randle Posted November 7, 2007 Author Report Posted November 7, 2007 I emailed Buffalo and told them about this and said i thought it might be a good idea to add this to their knowledge base but their response was that they don't add OS specific advice.............So what are all the articles they have about joining AD and surely adding the address to the exceptions list would need to be added to any browser used!!?
rlangle Posted November 8, 2007 Report Posted November 8, 2007 Hi I have had a TeraStation Pro for some time without issue. I have now purchased a Linkstation Pro and was wanting to backup the TeraStation to the Linkstation. Both these devices are on the same subnet and physical hub, yet they do not seem to be able to see each other in the 'Disk BackUp' option 'Linkstation List' / 'Terastation List'. Any ideas?? I assume it must be possible to backup my Terastation to my Linkstation directly?? I have updated both devices with the latest firmaware... And can see bot with out issue from my PC using file explorer and internet explorer Thanks in Advance Rob
