We are aware of an issue on SSL Filtering where websites are getting blocked while being accessed through a Google search. This has been escalated within RM and their senior engineers are investigating this as a high priority.

It has been reported to HGfL and they are investigating.

I've just been on the phone to UpData and they've informed me that there are issues in Beds and Peterborough. Some sites works fine but others timeout.

Google are about to make a major change to their search facility. This means Protex and other filtering providers must implement secure-content inspection by mid-January 2015 to continue with the same level of filtering as currently provided. Secure-content inspection requires that ALL users have an additional browser certificate installed.

What to do if your Local Authority provides Protex filtering

All schools and academies that use Protex must install a Protex RootCA SSL certificate on every device that accesses the Internet. The required certificate is available from http://protex.e2bn.org/certs together with installation instructions and a Frequently Asked Questions section.

What to do if you use ProtexLocal

If you have a ProtexLocal system on site including E2BN Direct customers, you urgently need to install a ProtexRootCA certificate on every device that connects to the Internet. The required certificate is available from http://protex.e2bn.org/certs together with installation instructions.

In addtion to the above your ProtexLocal system will require a software upgrade.

If you have purchased ProtexLocal straight from E2BN then we will be advising you of when you should carry out the system upgrade. If you have E2BN Direct or support from a reseller such as Equiinet then your reseller will be contacting you to arrange an upgrade of your Protex Local system.

This change is very likely to happen in the next few days so please act NOW

As this change by Google affects all filtering products, schools not using Protex (either ProtexLocal or via their Local Authority) should urgently consult with their filtering provider regarding this issue.

URGENT: Google to withdraw nosslsearch option.

E2BN were informed by Google a few weeks ago that they are planning to withdraw the nosslsearch option that Protex and other school web filtering services use in order to filter Google searches and to blank inappropriate image thumbnails in Google image search. The effect of this is to force all Google searches to be encrypted between the browser and the Google servers using https. The latest date we have from Google for the change is mid January 2015. Since we heard this we have been busy investigating the effect this would have on Protex filtering and how we can provide a solution.

What to do if your Local Authority provides Protex filtering

Local Authorities have already been alerted and should be contacting the schools that they support.

However, all schools and academies that use Protex must install a ProtexRootCA certificate on every device that accesses the Internet. We're in Barnet, so can travel to just about anywhere server by LGfL or to Herts.

Is there anyone on here from the Cambridge area who uses managed IT moved away from using their email system, and set up exchange in house? We currently use the Education ICT services Email system for staff and students and would like to look at bringing that in-house using exchange.

Has anyone had any experience of trying to do this, and I guess the more important question is has anyone been successful.

ICT in Schools Conference 2010

I'm going on Wednesday.

The MRS finalisation is approaching now. I've emailed and PM'ed a few of my Norfolk colleagues on here but I'm still trying to get hold of more JE Numbers (JE0000) to make a comparison with mine.

The response I've had so far is that Network Managers are fairly scattered in their MRS Assessments. Some NM's at School starting at Grade 6 (Old Gradings) and others on SO3 or above.

My initial idea on the MRS is that it is meant to level the playing field somewhat. I've not seen that in my small amount of results I've had in.

So, if any of you in the Norfolk area are willing to drop their JE Numbers in it would be appreciated.

The reason I started this is that I'm still (according to MRS) at my old school as a Technician!
