As business buzz-words go, it is up there with paradigm shifting and strategic synergy. Like these, it is often used liberally without an accurate context, and anyone remotely interested in IT or data management will be bored to tears with hearing the term. And yet it seems to be thrown around in the business world as a dark art solution to the continued seesaw economic depression.</p><p> </p><p>
When one analyses the traditional definition of Big Data, it is harder still to understand how it can be of any use under the modern government banner of individualised and personalised learning. While there is no question the use of large amalgamated data collected from national testing and census has been of benefit; allowing schools and education authorities to benchmark their personal successes or failures against the masses, in that sentence is a critical fact: This is not their success, but rather the students whose data this is truly about, and so leads to a just as critical argument: Can the same measures really be used on a smaller scale for individual learners? Perhaps Middle Data. Medium Data. Not-quite-so-big Data. And if such information is prevalent, how easily available and accessible, and easy to interpret, is this analysis to the individual themselves. After all, we are wading deep into an individual-driven and tailored education future over the next decade.</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>What is Big Data in education?</strong></p><p> </p><p>
Well, firstly a broader idea of what Big Data is in general:</p><p> </p><p>
“Big data – information of extreme size, diversity and complexity… [used] to help organizations drive innovation by gaining new and faster insight into their customers.” (Gartner)</p><p> </p><p>
Big Data is use of large volumes of comparable data, almost always anomalised (interested in the what, when, where, how… but not the who or the why), aggregated and summarised based on the focal point of the analysis. In telecommunications, we might be interested to see the numbers of mobile phone users, grouped by their provider, that made calls over a one month period in the city of Bristol. Why? Because today we are interested to see who we might award a contract to for a new mobile signal mast in the city. This may be to better serve the majority of customers based on frequency and volumes from one provider, but it may also be used to drive up use from less popular providers. So often the context of the answer is just as important as the context of the data gathered.</p><p> </p><p>
So what Big Data do we already use in education? The answer is quite a lot. At a level traditionally high above school interest (although this is not always the case), is the use of census data, tracking the populations, attendance, demographics and education provision and outcomes in all schools across the country. Much like the national census every 10 years, this information in Big Data format has the capability to inform policy and provision makers on where and how resources should be focused. How this is realised in practice is another conversation of course.</p><p>
Then we come down to the school level. Schools regularly use elements of the collected mass data to analyse how they as a group, the school, is doing against their national neighbours: against the average of all the other schools in the country. Are they doing better or worse? How do they fair regionally? Like all Big Data analysis, the more information you have (the more schools are included in a figure), theoretically the more accurate it as a recorded average. The more schools there are, the less skew impact a failing school with wildly differing exam results will have on the average (as too will a skew of a school excelling). And by and large we accept these as figures to benchmark against.</p><p> </p><p>
Then it is down to the interpretation of that benchmark compared to the school individual figures and the myriad of extrapolation techniques to make some positive sense of the comparisons, often where a simple “we are above (or more likely when we are below) average” is not enough.</p><p>
But is this influencing change, or simply saying that change may be needed?</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>What new categories of Big Data affect schools and in particular academies?</strong></p><p> </p><p>
Traditional analysis of data internally or externally of schools have focused around attainment, attendance and hard-line quantifiable figures from both. After all, Big Data is the analysis of figures collected that are comparable.</p><p> </p><p>
The past decade has seen the emergence and prevalence of Academies and other non traditional state school-type establishments. Academies are the most high profile of the groups, and often are run by or owned by parent (no pun intended) companies and run very much with a business focus in mind. And it is this new dynamic, not always at the forefront of minds for those working in or around education; of a priority being set on improving efficient expenditure, reducing costs and not simply having and spending a budget even though this is still a case. Changes too in the funding to schools based on a number of outcomes and the demographics of students either accepted into academies or the circumstances surrounding their education and abilities, all now mean performance outcomes locally and nationally also impact directly or indirectly on baseline profits. So their ability to measure performance in the existing key performance indicators, as well as in new areas of financial implications is as important as ever.</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>How can Big Data influence school (business) operation?</strong></p><p> </p><p>
This of course leads into how this analysis can and will affect the business operations of a school. And it returns to the original key point made: Does Big Data give you the ability to make informed changes or does it simply tell you the outcomes of everyone else’s? And if we return to the analogy of what the context of the answer is; what changes does an Academy want to focus on? The answer in part, not presented negatively or positively, includes the phrases profit and sustainability. Because let’s face it, no Academy sponsor… business… will plough unlimited recourses for an indefinite time into an institution that does not return on the investment, no matter how justified the cause is.</p><p> </p><p>
However, this in turn makes Big Data incredibly important to the business operation of a school or academy, because it can show what everyone else is doing, compare those levels with how you are performing, and give an indication as to how much extra investment (or sustained investment) may be needed to bring your establishment(s) to a level you are satisfied with. It of course perhaps not tell you what you need to invest in (teachers, buildings, equipment, change in curriculum, innovation), but certainly can give an indication as to the areas that can be improved, again benchmarked again the national statistics. Perhaps your analysis shows you are well above average in maths and science, and looking back over the past 2 years, you invested in tablet devices for your year 9 – year 11 students. It’s not to say that a tablet device will get your english levels up to the mark, but is worth of an investigation into a change in approach. Conversely, perhaps those laptops for all Year 12s taking <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr> have not drastically improved your attainment, and so your planned investment to re-scope the project to all post-16 years should be re-examined.</p><p> </p><p>
The point it, Big Data on its own does nothing, even when comparing your internal performances to the national scores. Sitting back content because you are above the national average, or confident because the school was ranked top 100 nationally, does not make full use of the information provided. Big Data is just that: Data. It only becomes useful when we put a humanistic meaning or use to it.</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>How can/does Big Data influence school improvement?</strong></p><p> </p><p>
Realistically, the answer to this has just been covered. The business viability side of the data analysis feeds directly into the outcomes and influences school improvement through the actions taken as a result. Or it should. Like the best businesses, the best schools will realise that throwing money at a situation to make it improve in the short term often does not have the same impact as investing appropriately along a solid and well refined and agreed improvement plan that takes many years and sustained and targeted investment.</p><p> </p><p>
Examples where government initiatives, which I have been involved in myself while working in schools, have not had any or the desired impact, have included Laptops for Teachers and Specialist Status of schools. This is not to say that these programmes have not been successfully implemented, as I know many schools that are celebrated for their success as a result, and rightly so. However, a plan solely based on improving student outcomes if teachers can have laptops (primarily so they can work from home as well) doesn’t need me or anyone to point out where the Grand Canyon sized gap is between the action and outcome. Leaving aside the larger, behind the scenes technical investment to make it a success, the change in policy for teacher working expectations and training costs involved, none of which directly correlate to how a students learning and output is improved.  And with a school securing £1m over a number of years to spend on technology… Interactive boards and projectors already on the shipping pallet before any teacher knew what they might actually do with them…</p><p> </p><p>
So if Big Data is giving us the ability to analyse our outcomes compared to everyone else, allow us to identify where we are not doing as well as everyone else (and for balance, where we are doing better!), and give us the focus for where change, investment or otherwise investigate what can be done, then Big Data is as vital to the school curriculum side of things as it is to the school business side. That is, it allows us to identify what is working, what it not, and give a qualitative if not quantitative measure of just how big a gap there is, and so an idea of how much improvement is needed. Again, the real key is: Big Data analysis will not tell us what is need to be done, or how, why, by who or realistically when… but it can identify where this action or set of actions are needed, and leaves it to the experts in the field: Teachers, curriculum leaders, innovators and leadership teams to identify the how, what, when, etc. It is that additional characteristic of know how far from the ‘average’ or indeed whatever benchmark you decide upon (higher or lower) that gives a sense of purpose, a rough plan and the achievement factor.</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>Does Big Data fit into the Individualised and Personalised Learning concepts?</strong></p><p> </p><p>
Now the hard part.</p><p> </p><p>
We have Big Data assisting in giving the school an informed analysis of their progress, their current achievements and areas that they are excelling in and also underachieving compared to the national averages. And it should be mentioned at this point that such analysis has to be taken, not in context of a single school year bounded by the start and end of the school calendar, but successive year trends so as not skewed by a major school event (maybe a death, a school incident, a major fire, or even positive events such as major anniversary celebrations across the school year, all of which it is easy to see how these at the right time of year could impact on the cold, unforgiving raw data outputs).</p><p> </p><p>
But can the same concepts be used to influence how an individual student improves? We have established that Big Data does not inform on the hows, or the whys, but can inform in this case on what subjects, or topics, or areas of study need improvement, and who requires the attention. This has been done for many years without the use of the modern Big Data concepts. Teachers know. Teachers can see, from their observations in lessons, their markbooks, the student’s interactions with others, inside and outside the classroom. That intuition that Big (or any) Data cannot quantify. But that intuition has been honed and nurtured and grown over years of adulthood, training and experience, and not something that can be expected of a student themselves in a future where student-lead learning is in full swing. And so carefully and obviously coming full circle, Big Data’s one advantage where usually it is a flaw, is its ability to give hard, simple facts that can inform and be interpreted appropriately. The difference here is we are, or should be giving those facts to the students themselves. Coming full circle for a second time in as many sentences, the context of the answer is critical. This is not to keep the student informed, or the parents, or to show specifically how well (or badly) they are doing, but to give them a sense that they are in control and validating that their investment is paying off or they need to make some changes (obviously here, with some guidance from staff). How in-control of their learning and their capacity to advance, over the control the teacher and school actually has, is a psychological question for another time, but that sense that they have active input, control and visibility over their learning and outcomes is so very important in helping them guide themselves (and not the teachers pushing all the time). But how can this realistically be achieved?</p><p> </p><p>
For many years, I have worked with education establishments across all sectors and age ranges and the one constant I have promoted is the involvement of the students in their own learning. Whether this is through transparency in the learning aims, outcomes and methods or an awareness of the assessment criteria, or a combination of the two, the ability to accurately, completely and openly feedback to the students and show how they achieved their current levels, and what they can and need to do to achieve the next stage is at the centre of individualised and personalised learning.</p><p> </p><p>
Recent years have seen the emergence of learning platforms and even more recently combined <abbr title="Management Information System">MIS</abbr> and learning platform systems giving students direct but appropriately filtered access to their own performance information along with a platform that can be used for learning, working, assessing and analysing outcomes. The blurred lines between the traditional <abbr title="Management Information System">MIS</abbr> used purely for administration purposes and the curriculum teaching and learning platform as delivery mechanisms, particularly with innovative systems that combine the two, give students new access to that administrative and data side. This, through the use of easy to interpret dashboards and feedback mechanisms, shows Big Data at a personal level. No longer is it so ‘Big’ however, the data is more restricted internally within the school, the year group, the class or even the analysis of combined and summary information of the individual student performance.</p><p> </p><p>
The Big in Big Data does not define a particular size even though it usually always refers to large volumes of data across large timescales, locations or other specifics of the information. The important feature is that it analyses a volume of data to give summaries or averages to be used to base decisions on. So for the individual, the decision context a student could be interested in is just as important like every other use in other sectors. Is the student interested in what subjects they are doing well in, need improvement in, perhaps focussed on one subject and interested in how they are performing in modules compared to their classmates, other classes, the school, past school years? Some systems are even capable of analysing information across several schools like an academy chain or cooperative, and where student learn in several establishments to take advantage of expertise and facilities.</p><p> </p><p>
The following is a article extract from The Guardian showing how important the context of the outcomes is:</p><p> </p><p>
“A couple of years ago, librarians at the University of Huddersfield made a connection. They realised that analysing the electronic trail left every time a student swiped into the library, borrowed a book or looked something up online, and putting it together with other student records could not only help to improve library services but also answer more fundamental questions about the way students learn. Was use of the library, for example, related to how well students performed academically? The answer proved emphatic. By plotting library usage against academic achievement they discovered that students who did not use the library were more than seven times more likely to drop out of their degree than those who did. From the next academic year, collecting and analysing data will become a formal part of Huddersfield's teaching and learning strategy. By putting together information on what students do, such as whether they attend lectures and how they perform, including their particular strengths and weaknesses, the university wants to make staff and students more aware of what works – and to respond accordingly. It will affect the way staff design the curriculum, plan classes during the term and make decisions about the kind of learning support needed by different groups of students or individuals.”</p><p> </p><p>
However, there does need to be a careful balance between promoting individuality with student learning and giving freedom to young and untrained minds to make connections and form decisions on the analysis of data, which is why an element of training for everyone involved in the analysis and decision making, including students. The same Guardian article also serves the opinion:</p><p> </p><p>
“Just because you have this data and can draw conclusions from it doesn't mean you should show it to students or tutors, because it could do more harm than good…  looking at big data sets involves "scary ethics" because it influences how [education establishments] allocate resources.”</p><p> </p><p>
While it is easy to jump on the safety bandwagon, innovation and improvement comes through change and often changes in perception. Perception that data analysis is not a dark art, and giving access to the analysis to tutors and students is not taboo, is not irresponsible, is not dangerous. If we show students and tutors how to find patterns and thresholds in the data, help students track their own performance and extrapolate simple outcomes, inferred content and student outcomes, carefully monitored and discussed will help them tailor their own learning while also as a by-product give them valuable experience and skills in data handling. A focus on an individual’s profile and skill spread and less emphasis on rank or league tables with the individual utilisation of data analysis falls very much into line with Personalised Learning.</p><p> </p><p>
Big Data itself does nothing but show how the masses perform in similar circumstance, it does not show how the individual is performing. But as a tool to influence the decisions that might need to be made at Government, county, authority, school, class and student level, and even influence the context of the decisions each level assumes makes Big Data not just useful, but vital in promoting proactive rather than reactive change across the entire education sector.</p><p> </p><p>

In taking this task on, I considered the following potential slip-ups that might occur during or after a migration to a new SIMS server and I thought it might be nice to share these:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>
-       What is the current server technology (Server 2003 for example), and can this be upgraded during the process (Ensuring any version chosen is supported)?</p><p> </p><p>
-       What is the current server technology (SQL Server 2003 for example), and can this be upgraded during the process (Ensuring any version chosen is supported, and proper migration paths are taken)?</p><p> </p><p>
-       What hardware will the new server use (Memory, Processor, Architecture), can this be maximised cost effectively?</p><p> </p><p>
-       Will the organisation be implementing additional features that will need additional storage or network connectivity (SLG/<abbr title="Virtual Learning Environment">VLE</abbr> for example), and can additional hardware be implemented at this stage?</p><p> </p><p>
-       Can the setup be made more efficient by changing the location of the databases to a RAID 0 or 0+1 drive set (striped drives for faster read/write access), ensured redundancy (RAID 1 or 0+1) and ensured minimal other services run on the server?</p><p> </p><p>
-       Can the physical server network connections be made any more efficient, or can the bandwidth be increased (teaming network card, faster switches, dedicated switches).</p><p> </p><p>
-       How do I backup the database, perhaps using SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio) maintenance plans and backup up that backup?</p><p> </p><p>
-       Can I implement a redundant SIMS server to take over in case of failure (costly, but if you are backing up every night, and keeping the redundant server up to date, you only need to restore the database to the new drive</p><p> </p><p>
-       Where do the client PCs point currently (connect.ini) in terms of server; can a more robust solution be implemented during this transition (implementation of a redirect connect.ini file to point to a single, central connect.ini would also cater for switching between main and redundant SIMS servers if in place, by just changing the central connect.ini details)?</p><p> </p><p>
-       What other information points to the current server (sims.ini) that would need to change (Implementation of a standard sim.ini copied out across the network)?</p><p> </p><p>
-       What additional services NEED to run on the SIMS server, can any be moved away?</p><p> </p><p>
-       Remember to also move the SIMS Setups folder, Doc Storage folder, SNOVA folder and other folders to the shared network drive location, if being moved also.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>
All of the above considerations are secondary to the aim of getting SIMS up and running securely, but should be considered to minimise future downtime for upgrades and further migrations.</p><p> </p><p>

Years ago I was stung with losing my hard drive without a decent backup. This was in my early days of IT and thought Windows XP would create a DVD using the built in software, oh how wrong I was!</p><p> </p><p>
Since then I have been sure, almost OCD, to backup regularly, recently onto an external hard drive. 5 months ago, a good friend of mine posed the question about the best backup solution possible:</p><p> </p><p>
<em>“Permanence, Security, Integrity, Accessibility, Redundancy”</em></p><p> </p><p>
Internal hard drives can fail or become corrupt.</p><p>
External drive and flash drive can also fail. USB storage in particular has a limited number of read-writes (depending on the workload this is not a massive amount of time!)</p><p>
CDs/DVDs will fail at the slightest touch</p><p>
Tapes will stretch and fade over time (ok a long time), and are not in great use for the home user.</p><p>
All of the above, unless you take precautions (fire proof safe, take it with you) will not be of any use in the event of a major accident like fire, or more appropriate these days, flood!</p><p> </p><p>
But all of these suffer from a more common issue: How often do you actually backup to these other devices? Because it doesn’t matter just how much you do, much like saving you Word file: you’ll do it in a minute, in a minute, opps too late its BSOD-ed (Blue/Black Screen of Death) on me…</p><p> </p><p>
So…</p><p> </p><p>
I began investigating online storage, starting with Google Docs as, at the time, the most popular/well known. My specification for storage has changed since I started, but has settled on the following:</p><p> </p><p>
   &gt;It has to be free. I am about to bring a baby into this world, I have no money for most things let along online backups!</p><p>
   &gt;]I want it to be accessible anywhere. If the computer dies on me, I need to still use my files</p><p>
   &gt;I want to sync. Otherwise I fall into the same traps as the above point.</p><p>
   &gt;I would like it to be available on different devices. Like my iPhone, again, some convenience, but not a deal-breaker.</p><p>
   &gt;I need to backup: Documents, Pictures, Music</p><p> </p><p>
This is the story from there to here, where I am now.</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>Choice 1: Google Docs – 2/5 (Free version only)</strong></p><p> </p><p>
I began with implementing Google Docs, as I already had a Gmail account it seemed like a convenient place to start. Instantly I noticed that without paying (Big no no!) for the Google Apps account, I had only 2GB storage, and there is no sync available, so everything needs to be uploaded via the web interface. I tried using this for a few weeks, but I had far too much to backup even trimming down to bare essentials.</p><p> </p><p>
Google Docs is ok for storing and sharing the odd few files, but further than that needs a better solution</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>Choice 2a: Syncplicity – 4/5 (Free version only)</strong></p><p> </p><p>
I came across Syncplicity during my search for an alternative for Google Docs, and was instantly attracted to the sync tools it offered. Syncplicity still offered only 2GB of storage, but during my research I found that this is the standard for free offerings. At this point I decided to split my backups between different providers (not idea, but allowed me to take advantage of each companies niche facility), allowing me to comfortably have 2GB for storing my documents. I used this for some months before looking again at alternatives</p><p> </p><p>
Syncplicity’s attraction comes from the software which allows you to select which folders to sync on your hard drive. It monitors these files and immediately updates when needed, both directions. It claims to be able to sync with Google Docs, but I could not get this to work successfully, but a good option for anyone looking for a simple but robust backup. iPhone app available but, and this is where the dropped mark comes in, you are charged per download.</p><p> </p><p>

I have always had a professional and personal interest in the new, the exciting and the ingenious; BETT has always seemed like the perfect demonstration of all of these from the biggest and smallest players in the education/technology game.</p><p> </p><p>
I will not hinder this article by detailing my planning and journey to the event, but I would like to say thank you to Tony Sheppard among others for a series of extremely useful tips as to how and what to prepare for BETT, some of which I followed (some I didn’t and live to regret!). Those key points I echo at the end of this article!</p><p> </p><p>
1st impressions</p><p> </p><p>
I arrived with a medium-sized crowd from the tube station, and found the entrance procedure very well organised. I do feel the entertainment industry could take a few tips on how to arrange large-scale events with the use of pre-printed tickets, bar code scanners and self-service entry points. Mistake number 1 however was picking up the BETT ‘catalogue’, my back will corroborate. Remember I had never been to BETT before, nor Olympia and initially was a little underwhelmed by the size of the place, but that was soon dismissed once I got my bearings and compared the size of the Microsoft stand to the map!</p><p> </p><p>

For a good while I had been looking for a mobile/portable device to act as a storage and display mechanism as well as a ‘quick internet access’ method, to use both at home and at work/on the road. For my family also I wanted the device to allow us all to check emails, facebook, news, bank balance, etc. at a moment’s notice there and then. There were several technology choices available:</p><p>
I am already a happy iPhone customer, but the unit I find is too small to be used for anything other than for viewing information through apps or updating my facebook status (and obviously the usual of sending text messages and making phone calls, but who does that on a phone anymore?!)</p><p> </p><p>
I have a decent PC in my office, but this is obviously not mobile.</p><p> </p><p>
I did not want to buy a laptop or netbook as this would have opened the door to me doing far more work than I want to when I should be sitting downstairs with my family (and soon to be first born).</p><p> </p><p>
I did look at the iPad and Samsung Galaxy, but at over £500 this was an expense I cannot afford (due to the afore mentioned young one on the way!)</p><p> </p><p>
So, I was left with finding a cheap tablet type device. I did a fair amount of research before hand, and say a good number of ‘cheap rubbish’ coming out of China in terms of these things, and so I was instantly wary. But then I stumbled on several reviews for the ZT180, the same thing as the ‘cheap rubbish’ but with some decent specs and recommendations. This option was made all the more attractive with a £145.00 price tag.</p><p> </p><p>
<strong>Initial Look &amp; Feel</strong></p><p> </p><p>
The design is a big take (rip off) of the iPad. A single ‘home’ button on one end, black boarder surrounding the screen, rounded corners and back edge. It is a good weight at 682g which gives a solid feel without being too notebook-style heavy. The screen is 10.2 inches, larger than the iPad. The ePad has a small on/off switch on the ‘top’ which feels again cheap and you feel you might push it inside if pressed too hard. On the opposite edge are 2 speakers which do produce decent sound quality for the size and cost of the pad. Connections listed above are all standard and expected on such an item. Just 1 USB port is disappointing, as is the lack of any visual uplink. Micro SD slit is a an advantage as the unit only has 2GB of built in Solid State memory, and the pad also has the mini USB to RJ45 port and adapter. Built in wireless cover the g band, no n but that is as expected. No 3G connectivity.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Net neutrality is a basic value of the internet according to web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, accusing Facebook and Apple of threatening the web's future development.</p><p> </p><p>
Writing in an essay for Scientific American, Berners-Lee named Facebook, LinkedIn and Friendster, among others, as sites that threaten web innovation by "walling off information posted by their users from the rest of the web". </p><p> </p><p>
"The web as we know it, however, is being threatened in different ways. Some of its most successful inhabitants have begun to chip away as its principles," wrote Berners-Lee. </p><p> </p><p>
The Apple system of beginning URL addresses with "itunes" instead of "http" was also cited as an example of a "closed world", which goes against open standards.</p><p> </p><p>
"These closed, 'walled gardens', no matter how pleasing, can never compete in diversity, richness and innovation with the mad, throbbing web market outside their gates. If a walled garden has too tight a hold on a market, however, it can delay that outside growth," said Berners-Lee. </p><p> </p><p>
He added that a danger exists whereby one social networking site, search engine or browser could create a monopoly over the web, further limiting innovation. </p><p> </p><p>
Berners-Lee again re-iterated his support for net neutrality legislation, saying it is a basic value of the web.</p><p>

After ignoring not only every group or fan page update (Please support this charity, dates for my next tour, etc) but also the mounting afore mentioned X-Factor posts of disgust at one Wagner, I realised that the only things most of my 273 ‘friends’ would post about were about their child’s latest toilet escapades, how great life was being to them, or self-demoting posts aimed at gaining sympathy from equally bored posters.</p><p> </p><p>
Something in me changed at that moment. Snapped is too harsh a word, but it will do in this case. I realised that for the past 3 years of having a Facebook account I have been hunting around trying to add just one more person who vaguely remembers me from school, had a fleeting conversation with at college, chatted to on an internet forum, or even know of though a friend and ends up accepting my request for the same reason I added them… to give me another number to my friend list. Only 2 people I went to senior school with I still speak to (and are very good friends with to this day), a handful of people from college, half a dozen from the internet, and definitely none from anywhere else!</p><p> </p><p>
So, my question to myself was: What is the point?</p><p> </p><p>
Recently I have made huge efforts to improve my professional connections via various methods, including Twitter, LinkedIn, and this blog. These connections are important to me in my efforts to improve my career and professional publicity, as well as keeping in touch with some brilliant, knowledgeable and generally worth knowing individuals and companies. On face value I would appear to have done exactly the same here, but actually in this case every one of my professional connections I have an interest in, communicate with or do business with currently. These are my active connections.</p><p> </p><p>
So returning to my social connections, 273 ‘friends’; now basing on the premise that I want active connections (friends). Moreover, removing the extremely complex method I am forced to use to only expose particular information to particular groups of ‘friends’, because lets face it, that guy who used to pick on you at school who you added thinking he can’t still be a complete pratt, do you really want to let him know that you are going on holiday? Will your car still be there when you return?</p><p> </p><p>
The point for me finally sunk in when I couldn’t (through laziness) filter out just to keep up to date with my ‘real’ current friends, you know, the ones you actually see or have seen in the last 5 years. No only do I not want to tell them about myself, or know about their latest night of passion with a complete stranger, but I don’t want to be associated with them at all.</p><p> </p><p>
Because the bottom line is, if I wanted to be a ‘friend’, then I would have seen you in the last 10 years!</p><p>
PS I would have also told you not to have had so many children before your 21st!</p><p> </p><p>
Anywho, Facebook friends now totals 74, and I feel fresh as a daisy! If you like to chat to me more about this, add me on Facebook at.... never mind!</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">395</guid><pubDate>Tue, 30 Nov 2010 18:24:21 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>The next generation of IT Professionals - Part 1</title><link>https://www.edugeek.net/blogs/entry/383-the-next-generation-of-it-professionals-part-1/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>As some of you know, my profession as an IT Trainer currently tasks me with working with young people looking to start their IT career, from 16 at Foundation Learning level (the new government name for Entry to Employment, E2E) moving through modern apprenticeships in <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr>. I thoroughly enjoy working with these individuals because it gives me not only the opportunity to impart my experience of the working world and <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr> knowledge, but also gives me insight into just how much the world has moved on in just 10 years.</p><p> </p><p>
Next year I have been invited to my 10 year reunion at secondary school (an event I will not be attending!), and it got me thinking about what I knew coming out of school with IT, and what opportunities I was given and had to to, while I was still thinking about my career choices.</p><p> </p><p>
I left school with an A grade GCSE in <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr> (among others!), and for that I created a very basic website using Front Page, the very cheap and basic kind you tended to see on Yahoo GeoCities informing you of the latest developments of someone's cat (think Facebook with better formatting!), and an Access database with was nothing more that a large spreadsheet, no related tables in sight!</p><p> </p><p>
Today, the next generation of would-be IT Professionals are coming to me, and leaving me (at around 20) with <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr> diplomas, Microsoft certifications, L3 NVQs, and 2 years experience of the working world for some. Some of the people I work with a becoming ready-made IT Managers, fresh off the production line and with a little guidance ready to take on that challenge.</p><p> </p><p>
And what would of <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr> are they (the younger of this stock) going to be facing in 10 years as these would be IT Managers? TouchPads for every working or student, walking round site talking to colleagues through this device on another continent? Already there. Cloud computing?Already there. Social computing? Already there (mostly).</p><p> </p><p>
Social workplaces, now there is a next big thing. No longer do you work for a company based on where you live, who you know, have you applied, but through social and professional networking, using mobile technology, cloud interaction and professional connections you will work with a virtual team on virtual projects, brought together by reputations, recommendations and connections made through experience, training and sheer hard work.</p><p> </p><p>
And this is something that I am beginning to introduce to all the young people I am working with. In a time of financial difficulties (2010 for you historians reading this) where entry and secondary <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr> positions are becoming harder to come by and especially depending on your locality, networking, be it social or professional (as I believe in keeping the two separate) becomes all the more important. With the advent of 24/7 internet and interaction, the country and world has become so much smaller for the better, and reputations via these mediums will soon become the making or breaking of job prospects and even careers.</p><p> </p><p>
But there is also a gap arising in attitudes towards <abbr title="Information and Communications Technology">ICT</abbr> and the working world for a number of this generation. All of the young people I meet and work with have Facebook, Twitter, [insert other here] and some regularly post last weekends messy antics in graphic detail for all to see, and despite them being clued up on the technical world have not entered (Facebook's ever changing) world of privacy... or is this actually: professionalism... or is this actually: common sense?</p><p> </p><p>
And this may sound like a contradiction to everything I have said about social and professional networking, getting yourself out there and 'meeting' as many people as you can... but I always answer that question with the same phrase: 'Would you take THOSE pictures to your job interview'...</p><p> </p><p>
