Have any of you got a self-hosted software based PBX rather than a hosted or cloud option? What are you running, and how is it performing? Is there anything you would have done differently? What was the setup like - did you do it or did a company do it for you? Did you change your handsets as well - if so what did you choose and what led you to that decision? The more info the better! We only have 2 numbers to port (1 per school reception, although the network and phones are shared between them), and we don't really use any sort of advanced functionality, just things like hunt groups and a menu for different options, so complex technical capability just isn't necessary. We have a HyperV server on prem already, which is about to have half of its resources freed up due to old software being moved to the cloud so we would absolutely have the hardware capacity to do it. We would be looking at around 50 handsets overall, including a small number of frequent user handsets and receptionist ones. Windows Server 2022 is approaching the end of mainstream support, Office LTSC 2021 is reaching its end of support, and some Windows 11 installations will need upgrading in the coming weeks. The server changes are particularly worth reviewing, given how widely Windows Server is used to run essential network services. Windows Server 2022 moves to extended support Windows Server 2022 reaches the end of mainstream support on 13 October 2026. This is particularly relevant to schools using it for Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file and print services, or other core infrastructure. This does not mean security updates are stopping. Windows Server 2022 will move into extended support, continuing to receive security updates until October 2031. However, mainstream support ends, so schools should factor the change into their longer-term infrastructure plans. There is no need to rush into replacing a working server simply because this milestone has arrived. Instead, check that systems are fully patched, review application and hardware dependencies, and consider whether Windows Server 2025 should be the target for your next refresh. Office LTSC 2021 support ends Office LTSC 2021 also reaches end of support on 13 October 2026. Unlike Windows Server 2022, this is a full end of support: Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, bug fixes or technical support for the product. Artcraft even has its own Office 356 Word\Excel and PowerPoint equivalents. Both have been coded via AI, and both, after some playing with this weekend in a VM, are not there yet. Not by a long way. However, they could well be with enough time, effort and tokens. I'm sure there will be plenty of legal and ethical considerations flying around in the next few weeks\months, but the genie, I feel, is well and truly out of the bottle. And where will this ultimately lead? Imagine a Linux based Office 365-alike setup, or tools that can mimic the functionality of Microsoft management and deployment tools and integrating with a current open source office suite? Admittedly, there is a lot more to the software and tools we use daily than telling an AI to code you one, there are often hard learnt lessons baked in there that AI may ignore, leaving you wide open to lord-knows-what, as well as near-do-wells looking to exploit the gullible\desperate. Which suggests to me we are not getting a proper SSL inspected connection. It is hard to say if this is new, because typically we don't browse without the certificate installed. I know a few sites (most microsoft) used to bypass SSL inspection, but the current testing suggests a lot of sites bypass inspection. e.g: cert warning - google.com. youtube.com, en.wikipedia.org No cert warning - gbnews.com, aliexpress.com, aljazeera.com, bbc.co.uk - the list goes on SSB block page - 888.com (etc) We've checked the actual certificates presented by the browser. GB News presents a certificate issued by GlobalSign nv-sa both with and without the SBB certificate installed. Google, by contrast, produces a certificate error without the SBB certificate and presents an SBB certificate when it is installed. Is this the same for others? To kick it off, I have a Dell Poweredge R730 running Proxmox and a backup server running PBS, all networking comes back to a 24 port 1Gb switch with 2 10Gb uplinks, one of which the host is on. I have 2 Server 2025 DCs and a windows fileserver running my AD domain and a PFSense firewall VM. Then theres the LXC containers running services: Media stack Ad blocking Minecraft server Steam game server CCTV server Nextcloud Meal and recepie planner Paperless-ng filesystem Photo manager Print server Home Assistant PDF editor PXE server All of that with a view to add more in the future... However, the warranty ran out in February of this year 2026. The school have had a few different finance managers in place because the main manager is away ill. Anyway, its either been overlooked each time because of manager changes or forgotten about. Now they have a permanent replacement they want to purchase it. The school and other schools we look after buy kit from Dell quite often. However they have now added a reinstatement cost of £107 on to the warranty, more than the warranty itself. In addition, Dell have never had to be called out during warranty periods. This was the Dell renewal sales individuals response:- Is there anywhere else we can obtain server warranty ? You know the drill: receptionists lose the printed sheets, visitors show up unannounced, nobody else in the office can be bothered (or knows how) to log into the UniFi portal to generate fresh ones, and old printed voucher sheets end up lying around desks like confetti. So, to save my own sanity, I built a lazy-proof script that runs completely free inside Google Sheets to handle the whole circus automatically. I'm looking at how to secure SIMS logons given to supply teachers. At the moment the office gives the supply a card with a domain logon and SIMS7 will open as it uses trusted auth. Now with the move to SIMS NG I have made a supply logon but if the office gives that out the supply will have the details they could use at home whereas SIMS7 will only work on-site. The obvious solution is the NG password gets changed after each supply teacher but what's the likelihood of the office changing it or telling me there is a supply in. Sounded odd but after testing it out in the room I've never seen this before; it appears to be an extra pop-out navigation that only appears when a) in Extend mode b) with a touchscreen display connected Problem is the panel is really inconsistent when it appears and also conflicts with the board's built-in navigation (SMART GX 065). Even worse, on the SMART panels dragging in from the edge seems to automatically cause annotation to turn on and you end up with unwanted inking all over the slides. I can't find much reference to what this "feature" is even called, Copilot doesn't seem to know outside of "it may be a new feature" and trying the usual suggestions like "turn off pop-up menu" don't help, as the bottom navigation menu is also there but seems indepedent of this one. This iPad is to have a specific mathematics calculator app that the exams officer is happy with. I am looking at ways to lock this down so it can be used in a public exams. There are no iPads on the system at the moment but I have managed set up ASM and linked to Intune (store tokens and user sync). Since this is a 1-1 ipad, is it possible to kiosk the ipad with purely one app available? Is that something I can do with an intune ipad profile + configuration combo? Or do I need to look at some sort of software can can lock it down further? I do have a whitelist proxy available should it require certain URLs for authentication and logon but would block regular internet access.
