Server 2012. A non-technical review.

by synaesthesia on 24th October 2012 at 05:08 PM
A non technical review of a server OS, you say?

How so?

Let's start simple.
This thing is rapid. Even on a hard drive, it's lovely and quick. But that's where my joy ends.

Yes, it's a server OS. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me change the colours to something that don't make me think I'm using a Tomy My First Server.

I'll say that again. It's a server OS. So why am I hovering over nothing to bring up menus of nothingness in an entirely

3 weeks with a new system. Oh, and DFS.

by synaesthesia on 25th September 2012 at 05:40 PM
Well, what a busy time. First week was quiet. Second week when people noticed things were not where the thought/used to be, thing's got rather busier!

The little niggles aren't anything that would interest anyone. We've worked through a fair amount of software deployments, and I'm really pleased with SCCM - deployments aren't quite as easy perhaps as RM systems but they're so much better. And so far *all* of the packages created for RM systems just work when imported as applications

First Day Back.

by synaesthesia on 5th September 2012 at 05:59 PM
Wowsers. Sitting here now glad today is over in a sense.
It's not been a bad day - users thoughts seem largely positive or non-existent. NM made it very clear at a training day session that we've got a whole new network built from the ground up and there *will* be glitches, there *will* be niggles and there certainly will be missing bits of software. As and when you find those bits of software that used to be buried away deep in the depths of the old system, give us a couple of weeks to get

End of Summer - Progress Report

by synaesthesia on 31st August 2012 at 06:46 PM
So, it's the last Friday of Summer and our task is far from complete.

Not sure why - bad planning, bad luck, best intentions etc. It'd certainly have been easier if we were allowed to stay for full days but on the other hand I think all of us were appreciative of half days when it was nice out!

We were severely held back by an email hack; we believed at first it was easy passwords but further probing of the staff involved showed this wasn't the case. That was about

Week 2 of our new network migration

by synaesthesia on 1st August 2012 at 07:45 PM
And things are looking surprisingly well. Few stumbling blocks but nothing to write home about.

First week was always going to be a bit iffy as there were still a lot of staff in. But a great opportunity to build the majority of the ICT suites and break the back of the heavy moving.
But why, why oh why did we have to do that in the one week it's constantly 30ºC?

Despite the email updates and reminders to staff we still had one member of SLT complain when I
