Feb 04, 2010 - 9:19 PM - by Ric_ |
Whilst at Bett, I was getting over-enthusiastic whilst showing off the many wonderful Citrix products that I use. Bossman, at this point suggested that I should put my enthusiasm to good use and show others how I've used these products to make my life, and the lives of my users, 'better'. So I began thinking.... perhaps a video for all to see would be good?
This, and Microsoft's little push for videos, got me thinking that there might be other members that could also share their enthusiasm.
If you have a technology that you would like to show off in a short video, contact me by some means as I'm going to suss out some kind of template to use |
27 Replies | | | EduGeek Laptop Storm Buying Event
Feb 01, 2010 - 3:31 PM - by Dos_Box |
Here is a reminder to let you all know that the EduGeek Storm laptop event has 2 weeks left to run. For those of you who have avoided looking at it, I rather suggest you do, especially if you have some end of year spends to get shut of. A few points you should note about this are:
1. No commitment. Even if you express an interest to buy, you will not be committing yourself to a purchase. Simply to be notified of final pricing.
2. The offer will com direct from the manufacturers, not middlemen, so the savings will be quite large.
3. We are pooling with other Buy Focus groups, so at the moment there are over 800 laptops currently in the ‘pool’.
4. The last time the event was run by Buy Focus the winner, Lenovo, discounted their laptop by 40% which was a £200 per unit saving.
5. This time you will be free to pick from several manufacturers machines.
6. The laptops will be modelled in 3 specs: Pupil, Classroom (entry level)\ Staff (midrange) and an entry level MacBook. I specced the laptops, and ensured that they were capable machines, not ‘might just do’ machines.
So if you really want to get a good offer, and it will be, then go to the page here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/edugee...vent-live.html
For more details. The more laptops schools may want means the greater the price reduction. This could save you serious amounts of money, and if successful be run again in a few months time with desktop PC's and a variety of equipment.

Right, it's time for me to smack down the meter ruler on the front desk and shout 'QUIET!'.
Now I have your attention, I'm going to lay down the rules on how EduGeek works....again.
This is my town, and whilst many of you have set up nice houses and get on well with your neighbours, some of you have decided that you can do what you want. Mainly this is visitors to the site who have little or no respect or knowledge of the rules we use here, so I'll lay it out for you.
We are one of the most respected IT sites in the world. EduGeek is where BIG companies come (and lurk) to get feedback and information on their products and services. What you say and do here reflects on all of us as a profession, and it goes a long way, all the way to the top in some cases. When the chairman of RM sees fit to pay us a visit on the first day of BETT, and call us 'very important', he's not saying it lightly. EduGeek is mainly a place of serious discussion, and is famed for it, humour too plays a role, but when it starts to degenerate into the net equivalent of a Friday night in Blackpool then it's time to get the big stick out.
Yes, humour is important, but when like us, you are viewed actively in schools and by law enforcement agencies, who view your posts on school security and pupil trends with great interest, then we must watch how we behave. We've breached that line between fun 'oo'er missus' innuendo and are now posting things unsuitable for viewing in the workplace.
So it stops. Now. Immediately. No 'ifs' or 'buts'. There are other places to be juvenile (I go to two other online communities for this type for online socialising). EduGeek is a place where your voice and comments carry far further than you can possibly imagine. Please don't spoil this rather special place we have, they are rather rare you know.
Chris.

213 Replies | | | Competition: Count the badges
Jan 24, 2010 - 4:54 PM - by Ric_ |
As some of you will be aware, I collected a few Adobe badges whilst at BETT 2010. So many so that Adobe refused to give any badges to any other EduGeek members
So this competition is simple... just tell me how many badges are in the picture. Easy!
The closest 8 guesses will each receive a full set of badges. This competition is not open to admins or moderators. All guesses should be posted before midnight on Sunday 31 January. Members are limited to 1 guess which should be enterred via a post in this thread. ONLY guesses should be posted in this thread. Any discussion should be taken to a new thread.

Just to let all of you SE\London based types know, we have been invited to the LGfL technicians conf at the Emerates Stadium on the 29th March. We're not sure if we are to do a session (the SRIAB could be a good idea!), or just to meet and greet, but we shall bring a box of freebies with us and hopefully be able to put a few more names to faces, see you there.

2 Replies | | | Review: Cyber Clean... The high-tech cleaning compound
Jan 19, 2010 - 3:26 PM - by Ric_ |
Whilst at BETT 2010, I had a chat with a guy about Cyber Clean. Basically, this anti-bacterial putty can be used for cleaning keboards, mice, kepads, etc... anything you touch with your fingers (except touch-screens).
After a chat about how it comes in various sizes of container at various prices and about the benefits of using it over regular cleaning materials (e.g. foam cleaner or cleaning wipes), the guy offered me a sachet worth approx. £6. This sachet is meant to be good for cleaning about 50 keyboards so my immediate thought was it wasn't cheap stuff!
Paul (my apprentice) and I have just evaluated the product and were quite disappointed! Although the putty-like substance does indeed work its way between keys and into crevices, it doesn't actually clean the surfaces! We even followed the two-stage instructions on the back of the packet... 'Just press & pull!"
Even trying to de-dust equipment resulted in disappointment - blowing over the surfaces removed more dust!!!
Next I thought I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and clean the keyboard with AF Maxiclene first, using the Cyber Clean as an antibacterial cleaner afterwards. To be honest, I don't think it was worth the effort!
To sum up, the product seemed like a brilliant idea but its execution was poor. As a material for disinfecting keyboards after they have been cleaned, maybe it's OK but it's a lot of money for cleaning clean things!
