Hi all,
We are looking to start using VLAN's here. We have around 500 computers and laptops, 10 servers and a boat load of switches from various manufacturers around the place. Can anyone recommend a good book to help me learn from scratch how to set up VLAN's please? Call me old fashioned (I'm only 34!), but I don't like reading (to learn) from a computer screen.

If you can pickup some old Cisco CCNA books theres some VLAN stuff in them, look at ebay or maybe amazon. I'll have a look through which books i have on VLANS and let you know the ISBN numbers and book name
One of my Cisco books Cisco CCNA 640-607 Guide books has a chapter called Intermediate LANS, Spanning-Tree,VLANS, and Trunking.
Page 230 starts with Basic Setup of VLANS and Concepts.
Maybe you can find a version of this book on eBay or Amazon, it's from ciscopress.com and by Wendell Odom. ISBN - 1-58720-055-4
If you've got different makes of switches, the terminology used by the switches can be different for each make, so you'll have to do research on each make and translate their terminology. Also, not all switches support VLANs, so check that your current switches do support them before you start as it may not be viable with your current setup.
Edit: Something else, one of your switches must support routing, so check for that as well.

The advice I've always been given is to ensure that all switches are the same make to ensure optimum compatibility, due to slight differences in implementation of the technologies used for VLANs.
netgear to netgear can be fun too, eg our GS724T and GS748T have different interfaces, and i just cannot get the wireless access points to play ball on the 48 port ones, other than that the tags flow nicely between them
