Could someone please advise me on the best solution to following:
Currently have 4 servers each backing up to its own tape drive. 3 run RM's backup software whilst one runs Symantec Backup Exec 11d.
We want to move away from RM so were looking at getting quotes for 3 more standalone licenses for latest Symantec Backup Exec.
Additionally though we are looking at changing the backup strategy in the future and removing the tapes altogther. We are going to get a QNAP NAS box with removable HDD that each server will backup to over the network. This in turn will then be backed up to external HDD's that are taken off site.
What licenses and setup for backup exec would suit that setup? ideally we would like it to run our new backup system but if need be still utilise the current tape setup say for example the network died but wanted local backup done.
What OS are the servers running?
We have a Dell Storage server with 6TB of storage running Backup Exec 12.5. All other servers have the Backup Exec Remote Agent installed. This enables all Backups to be managed from one instance of Backup Exec (easier and cheaper than separate stand alone instances) on a server that is solely responsible for backups. This server also has a tape autoloader attached via SCSI for backup duplication to tape. Works a treat.
We have something very similar to gybe78 - an 8TB NAS/Storage Server 2003 with Tanberg LTO4 running Backup Exec 12.5 providing disk to disk to tape. Just need remote agent licenses for all the other servers, and specific things like SQL or exchange. You can still get agent licences for older versions of Backup Exec. Tapes are cheap and reliable and easier to cart around/leave on a shelf for 12 months. Funnily enough it was provided by RM (as it needed to work with our outgoing CC3 network) but will transfer easily to the new vanilla network. Not the cheapest solution, but provides a robust, scalable and flexible industry standard backup solution. Highly recommended!
We have a Fibre Line to another of our sites for an off-site backup, we have programs (im not sure what they are called) from Novell that backup all our servers including the ones that arn't running Novell, the program backs everything up to our local 8TB San, then once thats backed up it's immediately flagged and copied over the fibre line to our other Storage Facility off-site.
OS' are currently running Win2k3 SP2 but will be upgraded to Server 2008 R2 as part of vanilla setup.
In the meantime they would continue to run Win2k3 until Summer 2011.
Just wondering whether i can install a server OS on the QNAP to run Symantec Backup Exec and then install the remote agents on the other servers.....
