Network and Service Monitoring

Hello Everyone,

Please can you tell me what you use for network and service monitoring.

I.e.
I would like something that monitors websites http://www.mywebsite.com, port 80 443 or whatever,is it up?
I would like something that monitors switches 10.x.x.x
I would like something that monitors services, exchange 2010 up and running? SharePoint? Remote Desktop Services etc.
I would like it to be Windows Server based (2008 if poss) and SQL Server backend if poss.

Any offers of useful software would be great.

Nagios seems to be built on Linux and have tried GFI network server monitor which doesn't seem as useful as id have hoped as well as seeming to be slightly out dated.

I use My Little Server Monitor (MLSM) to monitor network devices and services.

Details here, think it was developed by fellow edugeek ICTNUT

Doesnt that just ping the devices? Also is their email functionality for that?

Not sure about the email functionality think it was in the pipeline for development.

It can also check what services are running on your Windows servers via a WMI check, so you should be able to monitor things like Exchange, SharePoint and Remote Desktop.

Information on the new version of MLSM is here and it looks like email functionality has now been included as well as the ability to check CPU and memory load.

WhatsUpGold does everything that you requested.

SolarWinds Orion (v good but expensive) and Ip monitor (web based only, no sql backend) are also great monitoring applications and would recommend them also.

manageengine opmanager is pretty good and a decent price

You could also take a look at opennms - although it takes a bit of time to get the windows side working well.

I use PA Server Monitor from here Windows Server Monitor we got the site license which allows me to monitor the everything and anything on the entire network. Its the best solution i found after a long time of searching

Passeler prtg it can mointior most stuff incluiding http response times. I also have it setup to go outside looking at Internet conectivity.

So that's why you phone was going off that madly! It was Tweeting, Emailing and Texting you all at once ;)

@John: Nope, just one notification after the other as it gradually recognised them coming back online :)

Monit sends email to an email-to-Twitter gateway, we follow that Twitter user, and subscribe to it's updates via SMS. This was before we got fancy smartphones which are email-capable though, so this may change soon :)

So just have them sent to your phone like I do you mean, well will do now I have an email system that can receive e-mail on the move....
