Server Spec For School With No Server
I have just started work at a small SEN secondary school (60 pupils), which amazingly has no server. All the computers currently connect to a shared drive on my pc. I've mentioned how crazy this is, as my computer (only running vista Home) crashes if 5+ users try to access the network shares, but it seems to be falling on deaf ears.
The bursar thinks that as SIMS is hosted remotely rebooting my pc is the solution. This seems to have come from the last IT guy, who hated servers and figured NAS would do. I now have 3 dead NAS in my IT cupboard. Plus he left me 2 x 160gb USB drives to backup 400gb+ of data (which he only did weekly)...
The school currently has 40 computers/laptops, 20 of which are connected to touch screens for the pupils. The touch screens only connect to the network for Internet access and are basically standalone. Most of the computers are just running office and educational games. Of the rest of the 7 admin computers really need server access.
I basically know nothing about server specifications. All I know is I need something for data storage and backups. I've considered install server 2008 on my pc, as I've been told I have a limited budget, but figured even if I have to wait until next year it's better to get my request in now.
What should I be looking for?
