Any good network tool kits out there? need to make up my own cables, what should i be looking for in regards to the type of cable i should use , network point to workstation, had a look but not sure with the cable? cat 5 is used at the moment cat 6?

I got a tool kit from Mills Ltd - cable management and specialist tooling for the communications industry
Good quality tools, not had anything break in 5 years use and abuse.
I got mine from B&Q but I don't think they do them any more.

As a rule you would use solid core UTP for cable runs (Comms Room to wallplates) and stranded cores for patch leads, which are likely to be flexed more in use.
Other distinctions depend on preference and local rules - we always try to get the purple sheathed stuff as it makes it easy to identity our cables in the roof spaces.
Don't bother making your own cables pre made and tested cables are cheap enough why take the risk that your home made cable might be wrong?

Length of cable cut to the size i want is the reason why i want to make my own cables. i have a box full of pre-made cables ,all of which are the wrong length!!
I wouldn't use any patch lead that isn't certified to the relevant standard.

I have a Test-Um Validator (see Test-Um Validator NT950 Cable Certifier ) - it's great and it will certify your cables for a fraction of the price of a Fluke tester!
Westwood Assocites (tel 01753 881810 and quote EduGeek) can give you a good price on one.
One of my predecessors seemed to have an affinity for ridiculously priced tools so I have a ProsKit crimp tool kit... knowing what they cost I really don't think that it is worth the extra ££s over my Ebay spesh that I use at home!
