I have been with someone today who kept on and on about network printers broadcasting unneeded traffic if certain protocols were not disabled.
HE mentioned apple talk amongst other things because we are a complete Windows network.
I wondered what you lot do as regards to this problem and to also recommend any other things that could may be turned on as default that should be turned off?
I have my own opinions on this but wondered what every ones thoughts were regarding this?
Turn off everything except TCP/IP, that's all we need so why have anything else enabled?
Agree with webman, turn off all protocols except for TCP/IP unless those protocols are needed.
We have made this procedure the part of a new printer commissioning so its consistent across the network.
Appletalk is the worse.

Yep mine is TCP/IP too. Printers have reserved IP's with TCP/IP & not BOOTP selected also.
If your bored you can always break out a copy of Wireshark and watch the broadcast network on your network. Then hunt down offending devices spewing out junk. :)

Also we disable netbios via DHCP - absoloutely zilch broadcasts except for the usual ARP and the crap that comes in off the LEA.
Same here. The only problem device I have come across is a Netgear parallel port print server which, whilst saying it has things disabled, doesn't actually disable them and you still have a large amount of broadcast traffic for no reason.
