9th July 2012, 04:01 PM #1 MERU ipad2 youtube question.
We have just had a meru MC3200 controller installed.
On the guest vLAN setup which routes through our smoothwall I cannot get the youtube app to work on our test IPAD2 - videos just say Loading...
I have no such problem when using the youtube app on my android phone when I connect my phone to the same guest wLAN.
I have tested the BBC Iplayer app on the ipad2 and that works fine - I did this to prove it was nt a filter on the smoothwall causing an issue...
Any ideas?

Is there authentication on the smoothwall? You may find that Youtube is passing the credentials to the smoothwall and so just fails to get a connection.

10th July 2012, 03:25 PM #4 Hi Kenny,
Could you confirm if YouTube works via the browser on the iPad?
If I remember rightly (and I may be wrong), the app uses a different method of accessing content to the web page. It is common for proxies/filters to filter the app but not the web interface...
Kind regards,
Paul.

11th July 2012, 01:19 PM #5 Hi,
No even using the browser the page with the video does not load.
Additionally when I try the youtube app it states either "The operation could not be completed" or "You do not have permission to access the requested resources"
I have checked the smoothwall filtering for user "guest" and only "Adult Themes" are filtered. Although I can't see how it's a filtering issue if it works fine on Android devices...

11th July 2012, 01:38 PM #6 Interestingly on the IPAD2 if I browse using safari to "m.youtube.com/menugrid" and choose "Live"
then any random feed - it plays...
If I go to "m.youtube.com/menugrid" and choose "Browse" and then pick a video - it does nt play - I just get the swirling wait/loading symbol.

12th July 2012, 12:58 PM #7 Hi Kenny, sounds to me as through this is an issue with Ranged GET. The iOS Youtube app uses ranged gets requests, which your smoothie won't allow by default.
You'll need to add a rule for the relevant location/group.
Have a gander at this:
