Sort By Name Group Policy
Hi Folks,
Does anybody know if there is a Group policy that will Sort Start Menu Items by name?
When i click on Start - All Programs the list of programs is all over the place, and I can right click on them a select "Sort By Name" which makes them look alot neater,
However not everyone has the ability to Right Click and Select Sort By Name, and was wondering if there was a Policy that could be fired out that would ensure that the Start Menu Items always appeared in that way.
Any thoughts?
What are the chances of a forum focussed purely on Group Policys and Settings?
Regards,
Matt

Re: Sort By Name Group Policy
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply. We use a Mandatory Roaming Profile for Pupils. When the profile was created, the "Sort By name" right click was applied, although when users logon it doens't seem to make a difference.

To sort the Start Menu, you need to DELETE the following registry key:
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
MenuOrder\Start Menu
The way that I do this in AD is by using the PolicyMaker Registry Extension, which is a freely downloadable GP client side extension (Desktop Standard PolicyMaker Registry Extension). This lets you make registry changes via GP.
Alternatively, create a simple logon script which does the following (NB - NOT TESTED)
Code:
REG DELETE "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu" /f
and add it to a group policy which affects user accounts.
You can also sort the Favourites list by deleting
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
MenuOrder\Favorites

@ajbritton
PolicyMaker Registry Extension sounds very good. Gona take a look at it tomorrow. At last I can get rid of the .reg files from my logon scripts

@SYSMAK_MK
Yep, it's very handy. It's just a pity the GPMC integration isn't a bit better. It would be great if all the settings appeared there as well as GP Editor.
