Ruckus discontinues the ZD1000 controller
So, I'm just updating the wireless network at my old school and I have spotted on the Ruckus site that they are discontinuing the ZD1000, and along with it the 5 year support contract.
Does this mean that in 5 years time, they will also end up not providing the 1 year support contracts?
If so, it will put a huge dent in my love of Ruckus gear.

Most places are buying more than 12 ap's so they went with the logical option and cut out the least used aspect of their kit. They will however honour any warranty you have and if the ZD dies you get a 3000 to replace it.

The ZD1000 supports 25 APs, and they still have the ZD1100, which supports up to 50.
The point is more one of 'what if their is a bug in their firmware that only appears in a couple of years time when there's a new wireless chipset released' will they still provide firmware updates?

Ahhh yes they have a legal obligation to ensure hardware works for as long as possible by both US and EU trading law. Technology updates should not alter this. It's the same with cars that they must have 10 years worth of replacements at the ready.

BTW the ZD at my old place was only able to go up to 12 AP's before we would have had to upgrade (according to Ruckus themselves, and then backed up by @C-P-LTD and @MarkPower from Net Ctrl).

The ZD1000 can licence up to 50 AP's and i understand they are simply discontinuing sales of the hardware as the ZD1000 doesnt support the new Ruckus Wall wired/ wirless switches.

The box can handle, as I've just checked, up to 50 devices. You can license in several stages though - and 12 was one of the levels. The one at my old school has a 25 device license.

To clarify the situation (as reading through this thread has confused even me!):
The Zondirector 1100 is available in the following licence bands and the ZoneDirector 1000 can be upgraded by the following increments:
ZD1006 / ZD1106 Licenced for up to 6 ZoneFlex Access Points
ZD1012 / ZD1112 Licenced for up to 12 ZoneFlex Access Points
ZD1025 / ZD1125 Licenced for up to 25 ZoneFlex Access Points
ZD1050 / ZD1150 Licenced for up to 50 ZoneFlex Access Points
The hardware is consistant, regardless of licence band, and upgrading from one licence to the next is simply a matter of entering in your upgrade key to the UI.
The ZoneDirector 1100 and ZoneDirector 1000 are both designed for the same markets, and are available in the same AP license increments at the same list price. The ZoneDirector 1100 is equipped with more memory than the ZoneDirector 1000. Thus, it can support more features than the ZoneDirector 1000. For instance, the ZoneDirector 1100 can manage the ZoneFlex 7025 Wired/Wireless Wall Switch with release 9.1, while the ZoneDirector 1000 cannot. As another example, with the upcoming 9.2 release, Ruckus will be providing a packet capture capability. With the ZoneDirector 1000, captured packets can only be streamed to a separate 3rd party packet analyzer, while with the ZoneDirector 1100, captured packets can either be streamed to a separate server or can be saved locally on the ZoneDirector 1100. As more features are developed for future releases, it can be expected that the ZoneDirector 1000 may be limited in its ability to support some of them.
To give the official Ruckus support milestones please see below:
End of Life Notification: September 1, 2011
End of Sales Date for ZD1000: February 29, 2012
Last Ship Date: August 31, 2012
Last Day for Advanced Replacement: August 31, 2013
Last Day to Repair or Replace: August 31, 2016
Ruckus Wireless will continue support the product as per the warranty agreement between the customers and Ruckus Wireless. Ruckus Wireless will continue to honor the hardware lifetime warranty for ZoneDirector and ZoneFlex Indoor Access Points.
I hope that will clarify the matter.

With the release of 9.3 I notice that from the release notes this will be the last supported version for the ZD 1000. I'm a little disappointed to say the least, what am I now paying support for other than hardware replacement?

Updated yesterday our ZD1000 to 9.3 and have enabled ChannelFly - will be intrigued to see any performance/benefits

Still related to this, can I still upgrade the license on my ZD1000 ? Or should I replaced the ZD1000 first with ZD1100 then upgrade the license ?

Probably a stupid question but is the 1025 still supported then? :-S
20th June 2012, 12:04 PM #13
No, the 1025 is a 1000 series controller which came with 25 licenses for APs. Its still the same hardware as the 1012 etc...

Lastest build available for ZD10xx series is 22.214.171.124 build 3.
There is a later one for ZD11xx series.

spot on localzuk, the ZD1000 is exactly the same hardware, regardless of whether it is licensed for 6, 12, 25 or 50 Access Points (I.e. zd1006, 1012, 1025, 1050); the upgrade process is very simply- after purchase you receive an email with upgrade key, enter it on the ZD UI and you are up and running.
