We have been told to look into buying a NAS box. Have any of you got any recomendations for this. ?

I've been looking into a few nas boxes for personal use (uncompressed music - my cd collection). What exactly do you want it to do? There is a huge variety, performance, price, noise, features are all factors.Originally Posted by tosca925

Granted - only any good for file serving, but have an Iomega 200d running Windows Storage Server 2003 that is very reliable and you can use Volume Shadowing to enable them to recover files when they've deleted them by mistake...
Have also bought a Buffalo Terastation with 1TB of storage for about £600. Runs a Linux based OS apparantly, but it's not out of it's box yet so can't give an opinion. Might get the chance to bring it online this week so will post if I do...
I think it will be used to back up to, it will be on the end of a 1gb fibre in another block. We have around 5 servers which wll back up to it fro one thing or another

Sounds like a good use and one which won't be too complicated for it. I use a home built storage array here for a similar purpose.

SANs are far more flexible and allow better data throughput.
Since you don't need to do anything complicated build a Linux box like Dos_Box did.
Yeah,
Agree with Ric, SANs are more flexible than NAS but it all depends on what you want to do. The buffall terastation is a good product for backup purposes but it cannot be integrated to AD and hence can do ACLs so not too good for storing home directories etc.
