    Recommend me a home router?

My parents venerable WRT54GL has died so i need to replace it. What's good these days? They are on cable btw, so there's no requirement for an ADSL modem in the router.

I'd just get another one. They're great routers (I have a WRT45GS). Mine's been on for years without a hiccup.

Have things not moved on? I'd prefer something with USB and 802.11n?

essentially a linux distribution designed for a wrt45 - it can do bags of stuff, since you get root access you can treat it as a computer rather than an applicance

I've installed many Netgears, both cable and DSL. You can get wireless 'N' as an option too, unless you're happy with 'G'.

For the past few years I've used a second hand Netgear DG834G (possibly a V3) that I bought on eBay for about 12. Why? Because I bought a Belkin Wireless N+ router which had USB and obivously 802.11n but my PS3 didn't like it. The routers I have mentioned are ADSL rather than cable but there are cable versions available.

dont touch thomson too many holes, dont touch anything BT loads of holes, stick with Linksys / Cisco they seem to have some really good security - also many a Belkin have lots of holes!

I agree with CyberNerd go the DD-WRT root or get A Netgear.

In the event of a power cut, does the WRT54GL turn itself on when the power comes back on?

I can't comment on that router specifically. But my WRT54GS with DD-WRT firmware required me to manually reset it. Although I'm not sure whether that was down to having to use a replacement power adapter for it, as I'd lost mine.
