new toys for boys (and girls if they are that way inclined)

today we have picked up our new hardware to link our primary school site, and our manin secondary school site.

The kit is a pair of Ligowave PTP5-23 MiMo backhaul devices. We have them set up on a table, about 4m apart, with a laptop connected to each one via the supplied Poe injector.

The transmit power has been turned waaay down to avoid toasting the units, and we have misaligned them deliberately as with the transmit power at minimum they are still too powerful to be that close (even though 4m is the suggested setup distance).

The software is ridiculously easy to use, simply enter admin passwords as specified (then change them) choose master or slave, change IP (default is the 192.168.2.x range) add aes encryption key, set time and date, save config file off just in case, click apply and watch it go...

The data through put seems to be a sustained 4.5MB/s as reported windows whilst copying a data DVD from one machine to the other.

How the system behaves in the wild (on the top of a 6m pole and with a link of 300m) remains to be seen but i'm pretty hopeful.

I'll take some photos when we deploy properly next week and add them in.

    exciting times.

yeah, the only way really, 2.4Ghz is waaaay too crowded these days. we have them running the 40MHz channel width, at 5.16GHz default freq, but we may well move them up when we deploy.
