    Thanks everyone for your comments.

For this new system to work it seems the following issues need to be addressed..

    a. Managed/Secure wireless system required.
    b. Warranties on hardware required.
    c. Reliable support
    d. Consider replacement/problems of batteries.
    e. Educating staff and pupils required.

I will pass this info and link over to my manager. There is a wealth of info that should help our school to get a reliable system up and running.

    Thanks John

I think youve nailled it there 100%.

Although I would take b) a step further and try to get accidental damage cover as well

We have had accidental damage insurance which did cost €100 per laptop and only used it 1 or 2 times, so i would not suggest to use it.
What we did is, in every trolley at the back of the door is a list with student names and every student is responsible for a laptop.
In most rooms we have a max of 3 or 4 different groups/classes and so 3 or 4 people are responsible for a laptop, if they get 'their' laptop from the trolley the have to inspect to see if it is damage free,
if it is damaged and they do not report it and the damage is discovered they are taken responsible and have to pay the damage.
We started this year with this list and since then we did not have 1 damaged laptop yet.

I guess it depends how many students / laptops you have. We have over 2000 laptops now and we have a case open with dell / acer every couple of weeks.
