    Is it best to have a laptop on a wireless connection have a static ip address?

    Nope, Providing the AP is configured to get IP's from DHCP there should be no differences with it doing it.

    When the laptop queries the DHCP Server for an IP address it will get the up to date information from the server so a Dynamic IP is preferred really.
