Permission set on redirected folder not applying (GPO issue)

we have a windows 2000 network that has a piece of network management software installed. This is basically an interface to GPO etc (user friendly) (all clients are xp pro sp2)
All clients has the cleint version of the software.

I have been experimenting with a few pc's without the software.
I have test gpos and enable loopback processing in group policy. ( i had to do this as the all the users are in ou's based on their department. If i do not enable loopback (replace mode) then the policy i have created for the workstations without the network management software will not apply as the user policy takes precedence.

I have used folder redirection to redirect my docs/favourites/start menu.
All seam to be fine until i had to setup the machine with office 2003 where all the other ones i am testing has windows 2000.

I created a folder in the programs folder called office 2000 and one for office 2003. I the created two groups in AD
    office 2000 clients
    office 2003 clients
i added the clients to the relevent group.
I changed the ACL's on the folders in the programs group to
    admin full
    then
the office group i created depending on which version is was.

When i log onto the workstation as a user both office folders appear, even though only 2003 should on this pc, also there are no icons in any of the folders.

We previously created a program folder for a app only a certain user group could access and that works fine.
I have checked that the client pc is a member of the office 2003 group and rebooted the pc several times. i have checked the folders on the server to make sure the shortcuts for office exist, all the other program groups are present.

you have hit the nail on the head, thats exactly what i am trying to do. I have figured out why the icons are not appearing. I have given the machine access to the program folder and icons but not the user!!!!!.
