Re: What speed Internet do you get provided from your LEA

In Lancashire we have got most of our secondaries (apart from ChrisH who actually lives on the moon) are on 55meg links and those in cabled areas are on 100meg. Some are on 1GB links due to their being on the backbone or feeding other schools. Our primaries are on at least 2meg.
We still have a few schools however running below the speed they should really have due to geographical reasons, as it gets dammed hilly around here in places ( 2 thirds of them!)

We're supposed to have 100Meg. Somehow it feels more like 100K at the moment

my last place was "2MB" for 7K a year, biggest joke ever, god knows what they are getting from NYCC now, probably another big joke for even more money!!

I use 2MB ADSL at one school and 8MB ADSL at another and 2MB leased line at another so plenty of options there.

Re: What speed Internet do you get provided from your LEA

Although you might have 100Mbit going into the school, that presumably feeds back to some central point and eventually out to the internet. What you need to know is the size of those pipes and who you're sharing them with - eg if your LEA connects to all schools at 100Mbit but they then have a 2Mbit leased line to the internet then you aren't going to get more than 2Mbit. Even if they've got 100Mbit out and you're sharing it with others then you're not going to get 100Mbit yourself.

If you're not currently doing it then monitor the inbound/outbound traffic - easiest with mrtg (http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/)

If you've never seen it in action then take a look at http://monitor.ulcc.net/mrtg/rsc.html and pick a college.

Durham LEA and Durhamnet provide a 100Mb bandwidth internet connection to our school of 720 pupils and 70 Staff approx 300 workstations. Although we have had issues this past 3 months with this, they are in the process of rectifying.

10Mbit - tends to be fairly quick even at busy times. It's always satisfying to be downloading at 1MBps!

Amen... This could get me ranting again... but anyway, my current two schools are using a 2Mb part microwave, part leased line (MLL Telecom) that, like someone else above, is fine so long as there's no weather (it's like british rail when there's leaves around! :|).. Usual throughput is more like 250Kb though and the appalling filter/proxy usually means that it drops even further with multiple 404 and 500 errors.

Currently testing out and figuring out the bugs on a 8mb:400Kb standard ADSL line before telling the LEA where we plan to spend the £4k+ they've been forcing us to waste till now.

Supposedly 8Meg fibre line but there seems to be some fluctuation and doesn't seem to be symetric as we thought it should be. But can't complain.

Re: What speed Internet do you get provided from your LEA

I believe we are on a BT LES 10 circuit provided by fibre into the BT network.

This is a managed service from the LEA and BT and the filtering is so arcane it gets right on my wick.

We pay around 25K a year for this god awful service and we are now looking into a 4 - 6 line bonded adsl solution with smoothwall for firewall, proxy and filtering.
