    Jason,

What exactly is the problem? The Securus rep has been open about who she works for. As IT Professionals we can then make up our own minds how far to listen to her oppinions on competitor products.

Anyway, isn't it only fair to give someone a right to reply if they feel unfairly judged.

Eh? Surely it's useful to sometimes have an expert oppion rather than anecdotes. And the beauty of EduGeek if we think they're talking rubbish then we can tell them.

So would you ban Tom Stone (SmoothWall), Phil Neal & Toby Belfield(Capita) rdhawkins (NetSupport) from contributing to EduGeek.

This would be very short sighted. So long as a company rep identifies themselves as such then then what's the harm. It's when someone working fro a company pretends to be an ordinary ICT Tech giving an unbiassed opinion that's when there's an issue.

    Re: securus

No NetworkGeezer, it just seemed to me that the thread has Securus stamped all over it when you and i both know there are other alternatives for the same service.

I did try in as many ways possible to make clear that i have posted in order to make other techies aware that there are other products too and i have tried to word my post in as unbiased a manner as possible

I don't really see what the problem is, Jason. I think it's a good idea for companies to have a presence on here - saves being transferred around the world in 80 seconds using their often-expensive phone support systems.

Hang on, don't buy that, by SmoothWall

In all seriousness, I *like* posting on edugeek, and probably still would even if it didn't do SmoothWall any good - the alert amongst the admins will notice i'm actually signed up from my home email addy - so I can take my edugeek account wherever I go

As it is, I try to be unbiased when it comes to web content filtering - newsflash, our competitors *aren't* all useless - and contribute fairly.

I reckon securus, like us, would like their "own" fora - might even have one, but tbh users don't often come back to vendor forums, making them very boring and sterile. Our Open Source (express) forum is pretty lively though, and we may combine express & the commercial lot into one big old forum as the two get reacquainted.

Anyway, thats my 2pence worth, now i'm off to visit the securus website

    Tom

    Jason,

I think your views are very short sighted. The very fact that a company (whoever) is willing to come on here and publicly acknowledge there are faults with their product to all and sundry should raise an applause all by itself. I don't see any sales-speak in any of Donna's posts, she has replied in order to help others. The fact that a company is willing to come out of its own box and make a concerted effort to assist others gets my vote every time.

    Re: securus

Bet nobody would moan if a few from Redmond were here - posting - trying to help us poor lost, misguided, underpaid souls.

I for one am in full support if vendor Reps & Support teams were here.

So long as a company rep identifies themselves as such then then what's the harm. It's when someone working from a company pretends to be an ordinary ICT Tech giving an unbiassed opinion that's when there's an issue.
    100%

I like the fact that Dan (SCL) posts deals here. I dont need 50 telephone calls every day claiming the cheapest, fastest etc, etc. I like to look and see for myself. I like Donna being around - Why do I need to phone when the question has been answered a hundred times before? Right on this forum.

Quite rightly I dont want -
'Our product is better because' or 'Their product doesnt do this'

But I do like 'this is what we do' or 'why dont you try this' - AND IF I ask nicely enough - I get the opinions of my peers and people who I respect who have have been there seen it, done it - AND are working with it every day.

Sorry Jason - I'm all for it - As long as they identify themselves.

    Re: securus

W32/Jbot I think it's great that someone from the company is on here to help out. It would be nice if every company had a presence to be honest.

I will totally defend Securus' right to correct what they consider to be inaccurate to posts about their product just as I will totally defend my right to say that Securus sucks!

    Re: securus

@W32/Jbot: Indeed, it would be nice to have ALL vendors and whenever the site admins speak to vendors, we ask them to join the site and look in when they have time. Believe it or not, some vendors are simply not interested! Others welcome the forum and see it as an invaluable resource, taking an active part - Smoothwall, NetSupport, D-Link, Apple, Capita and others to name just a few. Others prefer to simply lurk in the shadows to capture our opinions - I believe that RM does this for instance, despite being one of our major sponsors (see the MIS forum).

I encourage all members to mention us to their favourite vendors and invite them to join - it is YOUR community too (the site admins simply manage the day to day stuff) so please do feel free to get more people on board. If you are ever unsure about asking people to join or if you think you can help out in other ways, just PM a site admin.

What Ric has said about vendors joining etc is hard. I am mod on another forum and we have struggled to get hardware vendors to come on-board to help, but the buyers have worked hard and got there now but its not been easy. It takes time and in the end it will come through, it just takes time.

Safe for Jason to come back to

It's Ok Jason, maybe you have been a member of other forums where opinion on this differed somewhat. Yes we do welcome vendors to post on here, but don't worry, the minute they start turning it solely into an advertising campaign, the mods will sort them out. he he.

    Re: securus

We've used Securus for about nine months and I'm impressed with the product. Yes, it isn't cheap, the interface is clunky and the upgrades have been poor, but I can't fault the company for the level of their support. What other software vendor rings you regularly (about once a month) to check on problems and provides immediate response? Their posts to this board are consistent with their interest in ensuring the product works.

And as for the product? Students know I can see all their misdemeanours and they can't hide a thing. Someone looking for porn? Easy to identify, document and deal with. Proxy bypass sites? Well, let the kids find them for me. I don't have to wait for the latest novelty, I can see it as it develops. It's part of the process of moving away from the "ban everything" mentality to "make them accountable".
