Best use of redundant RM SmatCache2

Hope folk don't mind me coming in on this thread with an add on question but reading it reminded me that we have a redundant SmartCache2 and I was wondering what to do with it?

It was replaced last year by the Espresso team who installed their own Linux Espresso server as a replacement for the SmartCache2. As the latter hasn't any space for additional drives etc we haven't put it to any use since but otherwise the spec of the machine and condition are good so we really want to find a good use for it. Anyone else had this situation and if so what did you do with it.

I haven't actually done so but when I was considering replacing mine lkast year I did have a think. Possibilities included:

    • Using it as a WSUS server (since if you lose the drive you're really only losing the cached updates and installation database, which can be re-downloaded and rebuilt respectively)
    • Partnering it with an iSCSI NAS and using it as a non-critical Hyper-V host, assuming it has the necessary processor capabilities.

  7. Thanks to AngryTechnician from:

Yay for ressurecting an old thread. IanT so did you have some input on how you fixed the fact that you new policy wouldn't apply as we are having a similar problem.

Have you checked the identification settings.
From the home page > maintenance > RM SmartTracker Identification
The next page gives you the chose of Active Directory authentication you have to go in and configure the domain setting at the bottom of that box before you can click the Active Directory authentication box.

When this is set you be able to pick up user and machines correctly and move on to the filtering rules.

Sometimes i fail pretty Hard. I Joined it to the domain in 2 different places and didn't realise there would be a radio button to change also if i wanted AD authentication. Checking it now to see if it's working. yes its the setting i missed. top on.
