It might be worth costing out a fibre link and a comms cab in the music department. You can then compare this to the cost of the wireless kit, another server, the time spent by you messing about, etc.

The pros of a fibre link will far outway the cons so if the cost isn't massively different...

We're talking public road and a small sch with no money here Ric_

There has been a thread recently hasn't there where a school paid for undeground routing. I doubt somehow that there are any unused ducts at this site - you never know. Still, I think Nath would say you're talking megabucks - not something they'd even start to consider.

@mark: I didn't realise a road was involved (poss. due to me not reading it properly). If the road wasn't there it probably wouldn't be as bad (especially if an overhead fibre is used).

In this instance it might be better not to allow access to all files from both parts of the network. Simply stick a DC/fileserver in Music and let Windows replicate the logins. Some trickery with folder re-direction would then mean you only looked at the 'local' server(s) for files.

Syncing a lot of data over wireless is unreliable and will be painfully slow.

This is the wilds of Wales - traffic dodging is a sport for the elderly

Exactly what I've been bleating about [ged it ged it?? ]

The wifi link is ONLY for the replication between server's & for the [minimal] e-reg data.

Thus, all one domain with a master DC [in the main building i.e. where it is now lol] and a slave server [in the music room] right?

    Re: 1 Domain + 1 domain + syncronised users = possible?

    hehe smarty pants :P

As i said in a earlier post tho, the teacher doesn't want them to use the Internet anyhow & as we only have a max of 2M, its hardly going to be a big strain hehe

I've got srv 2003 R2 to install/upgrade on all of these 'ere server's too, so I'm wondering where is the best point to add this to the equation.

I'm probably gonna leave out the renaming of the forest and/or domain - as its probably going to tempt fate a bit too much, but R2 before the addition of the music room server or after?

    Cheers
    Nath.

remember you need to extend the schema if your having R2 DCs

Surely what you need here is not another 'domain' but another 'site'. Once you set up the 'site' in AD, you can control how replication traffic flows across the link.

ahhhh.... that sounds about right ajb - but will the setup know where the client logs on to?

and thanks geoff - have already read about that [to the degree of updating the schema ]

    Re: 1 Domain + 1 domain + syncronised users = possible?

You have seperate IP subnets and associate each site with a subnet. You then associate a DC with each site. Each DC runs a DHCP server that hands out IPs to clients for each site on the correct subnet.

You will need to route traffic correctly over the WAN link. You can do this with Windows server but I'd recommend you buy a couple of decent routers for it.
