Have you seen how SSL explorer and other SSL vpn systems of this type work? they expose your users files as a web page where you can download and upload files and allow access to school intranet sites. If the client has been zombied they aren't going to gain much.

We use RM CC3's WebDAV implementation, aka Easylink.

Re: Student remote access....groan!
Don't dismiss Ranger Outpost as its a simple idiot-proof method of giving remote access to files for students. Its dirt cheap and secure as well.
All it needs is a port forwarded (is that real english?) to one of your DCs.
Its a good way for a site to actually see if remote access is really something that would be used and if so, then maybe explore something more sophisticated.
You can download a test client program from here.

Re: Student remote access....groan!
I like the logging features in ranger Outpost but I think for the price SSL Explorer Enterprise Edition offers more. For £1249 you get unlimmited connections, reverse proxy, network extension, SMS authentication as well as the WebDAV sttuff you get with Outpost.

I've just picked up the latest stuff on remote access from Becta's technical and functional specifications on IT Infrastructure ...
I'll peruse and see if they have any specific targets that we need to discuss.

Depends on the funding ofcourse, but Citrix is brilliant. Provides full applications and file access as if the students were infront of a school machine. Students dont need to buy Office as they can use the schools and citrix make plugins for about every os you can think of.

You don't need Citrix unless you must have
Application Publishing
Intelligent Load Balancing
SSL Gateway / Proxy
Smart Access
Workspace Control
Windows Terminal Server (WTS 2003) provides enough functionality for most people and Vista will offer even more. As a remote access solution, I think it is hard to beat.
Depending on the number of simultaneous users and if funds allow, I would recommend installing a pair of load balanced servers in a cluster arrangement, windows network load balancing (NLB) although not fantastic is free, does a reasonable job and is quite easy to configure.
I have installed this as a remote access solution in a few schools and it has been highly praised by staff and students.
For remote folder access only, webfolders using WebDav with SSL and an ASP scripted front end is a reasonable “zero cost” option, and that cannot be said for RM easylink which is the same thing.

nice try, the license is $299.
Which isn't so bad - Citrix license per user (£80-120 IIRC) and a TS external connector license is £1700 - educational.
